Location of VIN??

Hi,

I've done some searching for this but I can't find an answer! My VIN plate has been removed and I can't see the place it's printed under the wipers. Can someone tell me the exact location of the vin on a 1982 mk1 1.6 gti. Is it stamped into the chassis?

On the black scuttle tray cover hiding the wiper motor is a small rectangular clear window, Its under that window 8)

The car is just a shell so no scuttle fitted. is it printed into the chassis under that window? what side is it on a rhd car? Is it under the metal panel below the windscreen?

It should have a scuttle panel. If its been removed, then the chassis number (which is on it) has been removed too. If the VIN plate is also missing, it means the shell doesn't have an ID on it!!!!

Just behind the lip under the rubber seal.

That panel has been removed from my shell, I have spoken to the previous owner who said he may have the chassis plate when I bought it and he has it so it's okay. I've got the v5 with chassis plate on too so it's not a problem.

What does that sheet of metal do? Obviously it protects the heater matrix and wiper linkages. But from what? Heat water? Should I get it re-fitted or leave it??

Is that all it does? It's not for structure or anything else? Safe to run without it (Obviously unless there is a fire!)
