I am about as useful as you when it comes to wheels......all I do know is that you have to make sure the offset of any new wheels is similar to your current wheels,if it is not is could either push the wheels out past the wheels arches or bring them in to much........spacers can help for the latter.....I am sure someone on here will do the proper bloke thing and give you some sound advice :-)

the wheels need to have a fitment of 4x100 but you can buy adaptors and also spacers of they are too near the brake calipers.

Funk Star is your man for parts he is spot on, i do know he is a busy man but will always do his best to get you what you want and in good time.
as for wheels are you buying new or second hand ? if new you need 4 x 100 ( 4 bolts at 100mm diameter) offset (ET)i believe it is 35 which is distance from the center of the wheel to the insde face. look at your current wheels and try and get as close as possible to what you have.
you can have any size wheels from 13 inch to 16 inch however 13 inch you may foul with your brakes and 16 inch may require arch modifications.
If buying second hand make sure they have been fitted to a mk1 or mk2 golf and you should be ok

tell you what, if you see some you like, put up a picture of them and we'll tell you if they'll fit or if not what you need to to make them fit if you really want them. dont worry, we'll find you some nice shiney hoops!
