Quality is very subjective so prep and paint can vary a lot, if it's degreased clean and just needs peeping and painting I'd charge you about £600-£700 because there are so many labour intensive bits that need keying, priming and preparing before paint and the price of materials alone can be quite high. So if he says £500 and you're happy with the quality of his work that you've seen that sounds reasonable

i put 500 back for it but im only doing it once so may have to dig a bit deeper, see what he says, i want the whole car sprayed but with the cost of engine i will have to save for that, i got to do engine bay whilst its all out or it will end up costing me more later.

Sounds like a very sensible approach, nobody likes doing things twice

i will pop a few pics up tue eve when i get the car back so you can see it. i did say to the bloke i would do as much prep as i can and he said no, if hes going to do it he wants to prep it himself his way. i have a media blasting kit so i was thinking of taking the old paint off myself. i think just have to wait till tue, just looked on ebay and can get 7.5 litre 2k paint set for 180

If he's just painting the bay he probably won't use more than a litre which should cost about £25 but then you need hardener the ratio is 2 parts paint to 1 part hardener and 10% of thinners so you end up with over 1.5 litres of material which should be plenty for the bay. Look forward to seeing the pics

Plus there are 2 variants of Mars Red, IIRC Mars Red No1 and No2? So make sure that the colour is correct and a record is kept of code and shade. Especially if you don't end up using the same guy for later paint works.
As Jamie points out there's often more prep work that's needed.

thanks for your advice, i got car back today and took it straight to body shop, he asked what paint finish i wanted, i said i wanted standerd coulour as per paint code on the car, he then said do i want a block colour and laquer , i said standerd block, is this right ?. the engine and box is now out and i damaged the wing so getting a new one from vw herritage, i took seats and carpet out and its relly solid , the bloke said he would love to take on this car , he said if i strip it out he would do a full respray, engine bay and inside the car, and take wings off and do in arches aswell. thinking just bite the bullet and get it all done in one go . just want the paint to be right. any advice would be great as i dont understand pait but i can show him this thred and he will understand it

it just means that he will use a solid one coat paint instead of a base colour and then a Laquer top coat. From the factory theses car were painted in Cellulose and one colour. That paint is not used anymore. If you're confused go have a chat with him ask about the merits of the paints, what the differences are between them.
Yes wings off that way you can see what condition the inner wings are too whilst at it.

what paint do i need
Hello again, sorry been a bit busy, firstly solid looking car
thanks for the pics, always nice to see pics of someone else's project.
Back to paint, I personally would go for solid colour in the bay and inside purely because there is a high possibility of contamination ( i.e. Crud in the paint ) due to the very nature of the area and how hard it is to clean 100% and there's always the risk of dislodging debris that had been missed or just relocated during the pre paint clean. If this occurs then you have a better chance of flatting and polishing out any imperfections.
Base coat and lacquer do have better UV protection but in the bay and under the carpet this isn't going to be much of an issue.
But this is just my opinion as chortle said chat to your painter and get his take on things as people generally have a preferred method of working hence why he said he'd rather do the prep himself.
Again as already stated make sure you get the correct variant of colour.
Anyway just remember when it's done it's going to look AWESOME!! enjoy

Oh and I don't know what your plans for the inner wings and arches are but I intend on using upol Raptor which is tintable with 2k paint and is very tough and durable
