Handbook?

Morning All,

I'm new to water-cooled VW's although I own and have owned a few Air-cooled cars.

I've recently bought a 93 Mk1 Convertible. It's in "Barn Find" condition requiring a LOT of TLC and some investigation to determine what's original and what's been messed about with. I understand it to be one of the last of the line before Karmann went to the Mk3 Convertible

Can anybody out there point me at a source for a suitable driver's handbook?? Either a hard or soft copy would be fine.

That way I can make a start on sorting out he various boxes of bits, switches and dangling wires…..

Thanks in anticipation

Peter

Bentley is the best, but the Haynes has better pictures of the Wiring.  I digitized mine, and separated the electrics.

Bentley is the better book, but I kept my81 Diesel bunny (rabbit) running with nothing but a Haynes for the 20 years of ownership.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Yeah im with Briano1234 i have the Bentley manual for my cabriolet. its real helpful. Few things it doesn't do so good, gearbox, and wiring which is hard to understand but you get used to it. I completely, rewired my car with it, so its ok just takes some time and understanding and also a good forum like this.

I had the haynes manuals im not a great fan, had one for one of my fords but it didnt really have the depth of info i needed. covered few basic maintenance jobs but other than that it wasn't great. Bentley manual is expensive but well worth it in comparison to anything else i have seen.

Guys - Many Thanks for your input. I have the Haynes manuals and am familiar with Bentley manuals.

It's really the driver's handbook - the one that would have come with the car - that I'm looking for. Mainly to identify the switch layout in the cabin. Most of mine are dangling from their wires…….

Also the rear seats have been dismantled and there seems to be some connection between a black knob revealed when opening the Boot (Trunk) lid and the seat back???

Any info gratefully received  :)

The handle underneath the boot lid and the back seat is a lock to stop passerby's dropping the back seat and getting into the boot when you have the roof down.

There's some brochures online with pictures of the switches or we can post up some pictures of the correct order of switches, which ones are you having trouble with?

Hi,

Appreciate the response! I've had a look at the brochure pages but these are my main issues/chin scratchers….

The cable from my "Under the bootlid" handle floats around and is not connected to anything - a pic or diagram of what should be there would be a start.

I have a central console with three switch blanks. Left and Right are I suspect the window switches. Any ideas on the middle one?

I also have an immobiliser fitted with, I believe, the socket for the key also in the central console to the left of the three switches. I'm guessing this will be some '93 vintage aftermarket alarm immobiliser??

I'm guessing immobilser/alarm weren't factory fitment?

Some years ago I had a Mk3 Conv. with a power hood. I recall there were some tricky interlocks so that the hood could only be operated in certain conditions.. Again I was hoping that a driver's handbook would give me that info.

The handle should have a stiff wire fitted to it and it goes to a catch, part no. 155 885 737.

Ah! That's one mystery solved. I'm pretty sure that item is missing.

Sorry to sound vague but I'm away for the weekend.

I'll have a look soonest and report back!

Cheers

Hi Again,

Thank You mk1gls! I'm back home now and I have had a chance to do a bit more investigation work….

Lo and behold the little catch was there - albeit rusty and seized. However with a bit of work and WD40 It is now moving freely and I have connected the cable -
 which was dangling.

That's a milestone really because it's the first part I've actually RE-assembled!

I've identified my three switches in the centre console as the two front electric windows and the power hood. Progress eh?

The console panel also contains the docking point for the immobiliser key -which is still present on the keyring. Would I be right in thinking this is an aftermarket item - or were they a factory fitment on Golfs of this era ??

The box of tricks under the bonnet seems a bit "Afterthought-ish" with a couple of separate wires to a door contact at the bonnet and boot lid.

Any thoughts?

Yes I guess it's an after market alarm/immobiliser.
