Power hood - yet another question....

Post

Not working - things to test - and what are all these relays for in the boot?

So, I am now tending to all the electrical gremlins.

First up, the roof.

I have applied 12V direct to the pump and the roof works.

if I press the switch I just get a click somewhere at the back. A friend is helping me tomorrow with a view to getting the electrics all ironed out....

I wonder, does anyone know what all these relays do? I presume they are all associated with the hood.....

they are the cut outs for the limiter when the hood button is pressed and still locked at the the front, and the 1 to do the same when the toneau cover is fitted.
I had issue with 1 of my roofs and fed the 12v direct to the roof whih bypassed the relays, meaning could open whilst running and driving… lol..not best idea .

richard masters at crazyquiffs sorted it during a MOT for me.

The two relays closest to the back of the car are the forwards and reverse for the motor (up and down for the roof). The other two are interlocks as stated above. They prevent the roof from working with the cover and/or ignition turned on. If you need any help give me shout.

Just had a closer look at your picture. It's hard to tell but your relays may be in a different order to mine. Either way the two relays with heavier gauge wire will control the motor.

If this helps ya a wee bit.

Power hood - yet another question....

Right.
I have power to the motor when the switch is pressed. Pressed Both for up and for down.

Nothing.

I have put a direct 12v to the motor and it works, both for up and for down.

There is a big earth lead from earth point to nowhere, I can’t see anywhere it could go. We have tried holding it to the body of the motor while pressing the switch… still nothing.

I did remove a cd changer from the boot space there, not sure if the earth for that is this spare lead….

Any ideas?

Thanks Briano btw, but this must be for a later model than mine - I have no control unit, just a row if relays…

So you are getting 12v to the motor when you press the switch But the motor isn't working? But it does work independently, is that correct. Are you testing both the power and ground at the motor connector?

Power hood - yet another question....

The motor connector gives 12v on the red wire for up, and the black wire for down

Connect your meter to the motor connector, on the main loom, black to black , red to red. You should get 12v in one switch position and -12v in the other as the polarity is reversed.

Power hood - yet another question....

Yep
That’s what we are getting

Now do the same test with the motor plugged in. You will have to probe into the back of the connector. Is the meter still reading around 12v?

We’ve a little bit of voltage but not very much

Ok, so you have voltage drop on either the positive or the negative. We need to figure which one. Connect your red probe to red on the motor, back probed like before. Connect your black probe to the earth stud on the car body. Press up and down until you see voltage. Is it 12v now or is it still low?

0 .04v on both up and down

That sounds low even if there was corrosion somewhere. On top of the fusebox there should be a metal, silver coloured fuse. It's self resetting fuse. If the motor is failing it may be tripping it. Try swapping it for a standard car fuse. It would need to be high amperage, about 30A the old fuse might say what amperage . See if that works or if it blows it there may be an issue with the motor.

Power hood - yet another question....

We have been operating the roof with a 12v probe directly to the motor - it struggles, so I’ve been manually assisting it up and down. Just thinking the motor hasn’t been in operation for ten years….

I am now taking my mate to get his C19 vaccination.

Also, the pump is low on fluid, and I don’t have any hydraulic fluid….

Thank you Steve for the help so far.

I have a spares car I can nick the motor out of….

To be continued….

Thanks again Steve and Bri/o

If it is low on fluid, that is one of the reasons it is struggling. But to be on the safe side, check the Spare tire area and the bottom of the rear seat, if you see fluid there then you may have a leaking hose as that is where the fluid usually goes, that and the bottom of the carpet on the passenger side of the boot to the spare wheel well.

Defo no leaks anywhere… it’s all dry. I’ll get some fluid and top it up and try again.
