Is the noise there when just the driver is in the car?
Is the noise related to road speed?

Ye, the noise is there with just me in the car.
its not retaliated to road speed
could it be the pump strainer being too close to the bottom of the tank?
i put £40 of fuel in it today thinking the noise was because it was low on fuel but it made no difference

Hmmmm, weird one.
If it's definitely coming from inside the fuel tank, which is where you've just been, I would suspect it's related to that. I would pull the lift pump again and take a look

If you used a new piece of hose to connect the in-tank pump to the sender you may have it too long and the pump/strainer is vibrating on the tank bottom.
How do I keep that pesky strainer attached while placing it in the tank?
Tie it up with string, then after you have it inserted clip the string and gently pull it out.

So:the noise is the nsr brake - doh!
i have reduced the length of the pipe from in tank pump to sender
but today we went out in the cab, came back out and started up absolutely fine then cut out and would not restart
i had to have the drive of shame back (towed by my pals Touareg!)
i fitted the old old pump and it started up straight away so the new pump is buggered!
i got it from classic vow but am now nervous about buying another from them, should I get a second hand genuine one?

Try to stay with VDO.

I usually spent about 60 bucks for the in-tank pump.

New pump arrived from vw heritage which looks identical to the one from classic vw but more expensive, anyway I fitted it and it’s alive again - must have been a faulty pump from classic vw
i have emailed them twice but still not had a reply!
one thing I did notice on the pumps is that the original one it’s 15mm inlet and the 2 new ones are 19mm
looking at the part numbers mine should be 19mm
any ideas?
Thanks again

So after replacing the accumulator and in tank fuel pump I thought it was fixed but yesterday exactly the same….
after a 30 min drive I get home and turn it off, 15 mins later it will not start! It does eventually
any more help greatly appreciated

I wouls verify that your fuel pump relay isn't one of the suspect ones.
They have issues with cold solder joints on the relay contacts and an improper circuitry in some.
See page 5.

I fitted one last week from heritage, 321-906-059/G. Printed up with code 3.300.220. And says for 1.8 gti engines, not sure how it differs from other ones but cost me £61 delivered. Mines a 1990 cabby.

That seems to be incorrect, there are 2 relays on the Digifant, and both the relays are robust and well I have over 500K combined on my cabbies with out needing a replacement.
This is the standard Digifant fuel injection power supply relay which is the standard 40amp 53 relay.
VW #141951253B
Meyle #1009510001
Then there is the fuel pump relay, that is
VW #191906383C
KAE #2.400.140
So I don't know which one you are referring too.
The CIS system dosen't use those styles of relays, and I think some of the confusion is that there is previous posts that refer to CIS and not Digifant.
