What gearbox oil do you recommend for the 1.6 5 speed GTI gearbox?
and how many litres does it take?
Many Thanks

Stuff I use.

2 litres is plenty for an oil change, make sure you can undo the filler plug before removing the drain plug.

If you don't have a 17mm Allen key you can buy a socket like this. (Shop around as 1st link I found)

atf is a clue.. automatic transmission fluid.

You should also change your gearbox oil every 40,000 - 60,000 miles.

it is not only used for automatics
it is far superior to gear oil it has
been used in manual gearboxes
for over 50 years volvo recalled
in the seveties for gearbox oil to
be drained flushed and refilled
with atf vauxhall use atf still to
eliminate the massive problem
with 75/80 causing gearbox failure
i do know what atf stands for and
i know the benefits of dextron three
over gear oil

Well if it was better for the 020 type gearbox, that's what VW would sell you. Plus when one of the if not the best gearbox rebuilder Inthe country recommends the VW stuff then that's what I would also recommend :)

i am not disputing the fact of building
a gearbox which to be honest is not to
difficult  my  initial post was using  dextron
against hypiod ep80 ep90 what ever you want
to call it  so basically research and choose for
yourself rather than listen to what you are told
you go to a parts shop main dealer you are served
by some one with no basic knowledge of what
part or component does or where it actually goes
