Fuse box wires..

Post

OK need some help,

Bunch of pics attached. my fuse box is a shambles. managed to sort out head lights, side lights, indicators but still no break lights. There appears to be an extra connector on the wires to the fuse box that I can't marry up.

rear lights you can see in the pic an extra set of wires that have been rigged between the 2 clusters any ideas why? or is it a case of remove them and see what happens?

Extra connector on the cig lighter wires where should this go?

And lastly WTH is this connector for? it seems to be just hanging down from the instrument cluster

I think the plug near the cigarette lighter is for the light on the heater control panel?
Sorry can help on the other wires….

First pic I don't know
Second pic I can I only assume they have bridged the clusters because the original wiring that bridged them has a break.
Third pic Mark is right they are the illumination wires for the heat control panel.
4 pic is something to do with MFA memory/reset(I think don't quote me on it) if you have it.
As regards the brake lights, if you have a wiring diagram just start from begining and work your way through. Had a look in my manual and it's quite a simple circuit.

Ok after getting things working I realised that both rear lights and brake lights were on… took that bridging wire out and put the connectors in the right place and lo I now have both rear lights on and no brake lights on at the same time. Which now leads to a whole new set of problems ergo the brake lights don't work and neither do the number plate lights… and as for a fog light I cant find the loom wires for it at all.

Yes the cigarette lighter extra wire does indeed plug into the heater controls. Still no illumination but then most of the dash doesn't work anyway.

Don't know the age or model of your car but on mine the number plate wire is grey/green and also powers the boot light. The fog wire is grey/white behind passenger light which is extended to the other side with a black wire. Both number plate lights and fog light pick there ground up off the back of the light cluster. Regarding brake lights, have you got voltage to red/yellow on brake light switch? When you press the brake is there voltage on the other wire?(red/?) can't make it out from pic.

Hi TheBowry , did you ever figure out what the plug was for in the first pic? I've got the same thing on my 1989 GTi cabriolet.
Cheers

Highly recommend you get a bently manual and check out all the wiring diagrams in the back end of it. My wiring was worse than a snakes wedding but after getting the diagrams and just going system by system I found I had extra wiring loom on the brake wires for cruise control. Looked similar to your first photo. I Had to pull that out and then connected the brake circuit wire direct into the fuse board connector. My point is you defo want to invest in the manual it's a godsend.

Third photo with connector and grey and brown/white looks like heater control panel illumination connector.

Rewire your ground wires on each side to the Bumper bolts with a large ring connector.  Verify that your main battery-to-frame ground is good and has 0.5VDC or less than voltage drop.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
