Fuel pump Mk 1 GTI

Post

I have started my 'getting the car back on the road' today. A Mechanic tried to get it started and has traced 'the cant get it to start problem' to the fuel pump. Apparently I need a new one as the tap with a mallet did not work. Can anyone advise as to which type to fit, VW Heritage have one, or I have seen a Bosch, any ideas what should I fit, or even what was fitted from new? Thank you.

Bosch is the one to go for but I've seen/heard people fit the cheap ones from ebay and they have been fine.

VW fitted Bosch ones from new.

I don't think hitting it with a hammer would do any thing to help it start, fitting it up to a power source with the power reversed then the right way can help bring them back to life.

Hello again mk1gls, thanks for the reply. as you can see I have actually got round to sorting the car. VW Heritage parts have a pump SSP which they offer however, AVS offer a Bosch pump. I would like to fit exactly what was there, so if it is a Bosch then that's what I'll look for (AVS saying week for delivery?), do you know of any other sites that may have the pump? I only hope that its a straight take old out new in, connections on and its working. Do you know if I will require any other parts to complete the replacement, there appeared to be a rubber mount/spacer? I guess all the pipes will fit back?
Thanks again.

Looking at your older posts you have had the car sitting in a garage for sometime?

If so I would check inside the fuel tank for any rusty/dirt floating around depending on what year your car is and if it's a tin top or cabriolet you may have a lift pump in the fuel tank, check that's ok and the rubber hose between the lift pump and sender is intact.

There no point putting on a new fuel pump if the fuel tank and lines are rusty as you will kill the new pump in no time.

There should be a little filter/gauze in the fuel line/connector to the fuel pump, check that is clear.

Yes it's just a straight swop if you can undo the fuel pipes, you may need to either drain the tank or carefully squash the rubber fuel hose going to the pump or the petrol in the tank will pour out when you undo the connection.

Thanks again.
I have been looking on line and there seems to be two types of Bosch fuel pump for the Mk 1 GTI? A black cylindrical one and the other a zinc looking cylindrical one with an outer plastic mesh on it, since I have not removed the old one I am not sure which one I should get??
The orig. part number , I think is 0580254909, which is replaced by 0580464126? There are a wide range of prices for Bosch pumps on  the web, Ebay having a couple of suppliers in UK. Have you seen an original by any chance?

I've had the same problem and I'm reasonably confident the pumps fine. The rotator/stator shizzle is submerged permanently in petrol in normal operation. When the fuel goes off it coats it in gunk.
Crack the feed line off the pump and dump all the old fuel. Squirt some new into the pump and that will hopefully dissolve the gunk and away you go.
Those pumps are bombproof unless they burn out and yours hasn't.
Good luck pal
