Fan speed 1 not working on 1982 VW Mk1 Rabbit (Golf Cabrio), but other speeds do

Hi,

I am writing on behalf of my brother in the States, who is restoring an 82 Mk1 VW Rabbit Convertible (Golf Cabrio).  The fan blower started working when he changed the relay–but it is not working on speed 1 (it does work on speeds 2, 3 and 4).  When he selects speed setting 1, he hears a click somewhere under the bonnet but the fan doesn't turn.

He and I both would be very grateful for any thoughts you might have!

Tony

Sounds as if he should check the power plug into the blower motor Driver side of the Airbox for Toasty pins.

To be honest if it is working on 2-4 it is probably working on 1.  It blows really gently on 1, and there are times when I don't feel air.

That is the ground pin that got burnt.  I have had 4 Cabbies 89-93 and all have had that issue.  I just use insulated male/female spad connectors and jumper around the pin.  I also make Sure that the ground point is good, if not then I make a new ground to the firewall.

The switches are the second most common area.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

This is hugely helpful–thank you!  He will take a closer look at the blower motor and we'll let you know how things go.

Hi, my brother is restoring an 82 VW Golf Cabrio (Rabbit Convertible).  He has side marker lamps to install in the fenders/wings, but isn't sure where they plug in?

I've attached some photos–would anyone be able to advise?

Thanks!

Tony
