clutch cable help

Post

Hello guys just wondering of my clutch cable is ok, I had to fit the repair panel to the bulk head and when connecting the cable to the pedal I have to pull it and hook it over the hook on the pedal so it was tight, all the pedals sit aligned to each other except the accelerator and that due to the grommet being missing, which I have ordered, I have driven the car and the biting point of the clutch is roughly in the middle, I'm not sure if this is ok or if it needs adjusting, I don't really want to mess around with it of its ok, and sorry if it sounds odd but to be honest I'm not used to the pedal being like this as before due to the bulk head rusting the pedal was sitting lower and have driven it like this for the past 3 years lol so now it feels funny and I have had that high rev sound when changing gear as I'm not used to the biting point all help appreciated in advance

Just had a look at the arm on the gearbox and it wad really stiff couldn't move it by hand so I adjusted the cable slightly so now have slight movement at the arm, is this how it should be also the biting point still seems the same as before, I just don't want the cable to go or any other damage so just want to make sure its all ok

Be ok as long you got bit play on gearbox lever. Or you will burn out clutch or wreck thrust bearing over time
I would not care if pedal bit higher or lower as long it's got little bit play

There should be 10mm of easy pedal movement before you start to fell the clutch, you will need to make some adjustments after fitting the plate.
Loosen the locking nut on the cable at the gearbox end and screw the plastic bit at the end of the cable in or out till you get some free movement.

I adjusted the but on the gear box side and I got some movement on the gearbox bracket, I also pressed the clutch pedal and it got some free play when I press down before I feel some stiffness in the Pedal, also am I adjust it right the way, the way I'm doing it is undoing the 17mm nut on the cable and then the plastic nut turning it anti-clockwise to give it some slack in the bracket the  tightening the 17mm back up again is this the correct way or would it be clockwise of the plastic nut, lol sorry about the confusion just want to make sure it's being done right thank you

To get more play in the cable screw the locking nut down (turn anti clockwise) and then turn the big plastic nut clockwise to screw it in.
You can grab hold of the cable in the engine bay and there should be the 10mm of movement if you pull the cable up.

You do have the rubber bush underneath the plastic nut and metal of the gearbox and the cable is nice and straight about the gearbox?

I have a plastic clip which hold the cable in place.

Does it matter if the car is in neutral or in gear when you pull up the cable to check the 10mm gap thanks

No it makes no difference what gear you are in as it does not affect the cable adjustment.

On my Mk1 scirocco I've fitted a thick bit of wire around the clutch cable and brake master cylinder to hold it straight as I don't have the clip to hold the cable on that car, some cable ties will also do the same job.
