Clunking noise while steering

Post

Yesterday I noticed when steering, my little golf made a clunking noise.
I had a look under the car but can't figure out where this could come from, everything is nice and tight.

Anyone that has had this problem before? What should I do to solve this?

Thanks

Could be a Strut mount.  The Spring is  moving out of the perch and popping when reset.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

CV joint? put full lock on and reverse - if its a CV joint, it'll clunk a lot

Probably top strut mount, or a broken Spring, will big a thud/knock type noise, probably only once where going from lock to lock. If it's a multi tap whilst on lock, it's CV joint. Spring easy to see when jacked up. Top strut needs to be on the ground as its under greater loud and more likely to stick.

So, this week I had a further inspection under the car, looked like the lower ball joint rubber was shot.
I read on an other forum that this also might be te case.

I decided to replace them (obviously), hoping the clunk might have come from there..
Turns out it's still there.

I did however notice, when the strut/whole front shock, was hanging on the strut bearing. When I wiggled it back and forth, there was some play inside.

Now, I did replace the whole strut with Febi ones that came as a package the the Bilstein shocks I got for the car.
Should there be play in these?

The spring it self looks fine to me.

I also got this when just normal driving.
I did have to replace a out CV on my Golf mk5 so I'm familiar with the sound a shot CV joint makes.

Check the big cap/nut on top of the strut which holds the shock insert in place, mine worked it's way a little lose after a rebuild and it started to knock.
I could just about get some water pump pliers in between the spring coils to nip it back up.

Yes, I've been thinking this too.
I read somewhere although it was a BMW E36 that it also had a clunking noise coming from the strut.
A washer under the nut solved the problem.

Looks like the nut runts out of thread before it is tightened up.

I could hear mine clonk when I jacked the car up and placed a bar underneath the wheel and lifted it up and down.
When the car was in the air I also wobbled the strut and could see some play in the shaft of the gas strut.

Hmm, Didn't seem to make this sound when I jacked it up.
Only had some play on the strut.
