Yep, the 3 pin fits the rad socket, the other end is the 2 pin connector to the headlamp loom exactly as mentioned.
What the large red 3 pin , red/blue, red/white and brown plug?

Without you and James (who you recommend,) this car would have been sold as a project, and I know I would have regretted it! image.jpg

ah you have a 90spec mk2 fusebox then. this is for why the 4 pin plug on the lifter pump. you'll need to chop that off and splice the pre-90 type 3 pin plug. there are actually a couple on the headlight loom for the headlight range control motors near the headlights.

Not sure what the pinout is on the lifters, non of my diagrams show the pin numbers, maybe take the lift pump out and check the wiring underneath. 2 of them will go to the pump, this is live and earth. the earth is also linked to the level sender. then the last wire is level sender.

tap the mk2 brown wire to the mk1 lifter earth, the brown/blue is no longer needed. then run the wires from the mk1 pump under the car to the white 2 pin plug you see there, once you figure out which is the live and which is the earth

thats your fan loom aye, the 3 pin plug is for the fan. with aftermarket fan you just need the brown and red/white from that plug, the red/black will no longer be used

Cheers :)
I'll stop for half an hour, crack a cold one and read it slowly several times!
On the small fan loom there appears to be an earth strap with a blue wire with it, do i need to worry about that? I already have a negative strap from battery to the chassis and from there to the gearbox.

Talking of alternator cables, I seem to be missing the connector/plug (D shaped) from the loom that fits the to the D socket on the side of the alternator!

I plugged the last connector (2 pin, that I thought was the 2nd knock sensor) in to the bottom right front socket on the block, is that correct as it looks the same size as the alternator plug I can't find!

grab a mk4 alternator cable this has the right D plug on it for the alternator, then you can adapt the other end to suit the plug on the headlight loom using the old wire off the mk2 alternator loom :)

Thanks John,
I have a few days off now so if the weather is good to me I should be able to get on it and hopefully get it running over the holiday :cool:The top of the sender around the tank is in quite poor order, I'd rather not get into that if possible, could I bell the cables out some how?

Hi all, Hope you are all having a good festive period?

I've only been able to get on the car today because of the weather! I'm going to try and sort each problem one at a time rather than full bore in to everything all at once :$So first off is the fuel tank sender, John you said about a lifer pump which I have no idea what it is (googled it so now I know what it looks like) but I have found the cables that fed the tank (which I removed) and under the car fuel pump, as you said before multiple cable go to the pump rather than one large to each terminal but the connection to the sender was just 2 cables going back through the car to the fusebox I'm guessing, so does this mean there is not a lifter in the tank just the plug for it do you think?

Hi John, sorry to keep on but you seem to be the only one answering my questions, I'm sure it must be like pulling teeth for you!

The fuel pump/sender loom, get rid of the BR/BL cable. RD/Y is the live for the pump and the sender, BR is earth obviously so that leaves the V/BL to go to the last of the pins on the fuel tank plug? Is it safe to just change the connections around until it works, I don't want to screw anything up, I've put a meter across the connections and getting something like 45ohm, 55ohm and 12ohm!

all the wiring diagrams say is G for puple/black, 31 for brown and P for power. I dont suppose the pump is labelled up like that is it?

I found this:
Volkswagen Workshop Service and Repair Manuals)_mechanics/fuel_supply_gas_operation/removing_and_installi
ng_fuel_system_components/checking_fuel_pumps_(engine_codes_d
x_eg_jh_jj_kt)/

It looks liek the middle pin is pump power, and one of the outers is earth. if this is true, put power to the middle pin and touch earth to each of the outers. when pump powers up thats the earth. which leaves the other outer pin as the level sender pin.

I've been looking for a good while and I just cant seem to find a good picture of the level sender plug on a CE1. I have my mate on the case but he isnt back till the end of the week!

Thanks John,
I've plugged all connectors into the fusebox as per your Fusebox FAQ info but have a few single connectors that I don't know what to do with so not sure if that matters for this issue?

When I turn the ignition on I get 10.7v across earth and Vi/bl and 1.6v across the Rd/Yl and earth, I've tried all combinations across the 3 spade connectors on the tank plug and nothing happens, also put the Vi/Bl and earth across the positive and negative from the pump under the car and nothing happens there either.

The car turns over when I try it, I seem to have an issue on the dash as the light and demist buttons are illuminated when they are in the off position as well as the on position, and not sure if that matter at the moment?

Edit, looked at the resource and it is the red/yellow that needs power? would the problem be with 30 30b or the other spade terminals on the fusebox?

sounds liek pump is stuffed, no choicve but to pull it out then!

the fuel pump power will only be live for a couple seconds ignition on as it primes, then go dead again. for testing its easier to swap a 17/18/100 relay into slot 12 this will make sure pump power is always live with the ignition

Can I run a feed direct from the battery to test it?

The car was running fine before I put the new loom in!, I don't have power to the red/yel well 1.5v

Could you look over the image please and see if there is anything obvious?

I've checked the connections for the under car pump and put 12v direct from the battery on to the + and earthed the  - and nothing, done the same with the 3 pin plug (all combinations) in the top of the tank and nothing.

I get 4ohm across the under car pump.
