Gaz's crazy motor...

Well I've just got back from setting up Gaz's shiney new DellOrto carburettori and I have to say I'm quite impressed with the results!

For those who don't know, the car is a Mk1 1800 8v with a fully rebuilt engine, Kent GS2 high lift cam shaft and sport exhasut system. Its running bucket seats, Ronal Turbo wheels and lowered sport suspension too. He's bolted on a single DHLA 45 on a Lynx M-150 manifold and we hit the road at about half six this afternoon.

I was seriously impressed with the response of it right across the rev raneg - Gaz says it feels a little faster but that the mid range response and smoothness of power delivery is far better. Only problems I had with it was the gearlinkage seems to have forgotten where first is supposed to be, the brakes are still standard and when you look over your shoulder to check your blind spot to overtake all you see is bucket seat. On the plus side it accelerates like a hampster down a greased drain pipe and sounds like hell demons.

The mixture is a little weak at idle and a little over rich at progression so its only going to get better once its been on the rollers.

If Gaz ever offers you a lift - make sure you've got a sick bag to hand…

Oh yeah - and the off side front tyre catches a little when you have the car skittering round adverse camber right handers - we did have the strut top brace removed mind you.

Better go wash the petrol out of my hair!!

Kind Regards,

I just wen't across after work to set the mixture and idle.  It probably wants a session on the rollers to set the progression and ignition advance and of course it wuold benefit from Audi 90 brakes!!  (However Gaz says brakes would be a waste of money)

Nice review though Steve, aways good to hear peoples mechanical adventures

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D
