Replacement fuel pump.

I know my fuel pump is knackered on my '83 cabriolet, it's making an extreemly loud noise. The car starts and runs ok at stand still, but as soon as you drive it and put your foot down, the engine splutters and cuts out indicating low fuel pressure (as nothing else has changed and the only thing that's noteable is the very loud fuel pump) I've suspected the pump was on the way out for ages!

The question is this. I was expecting to have to pay about ?80 for a new fuel pump, but looking on Euro car parts, they have part 441440100 which is the bosch pump at ?79 which is what I expected, and then part 441440101 for ?36, which is an 'alturnative quality brand' which in this case is a make called Macht who I've never head of.  Anyone know if this cheaper alturnative is any good, as I don't really want to shell out ?80 if I don't have to!

Been running 1 of those pumps for the last 4 weeks seems ok but its abit louder than the bosch pump . The one to look for if you can find it is a pierburg pump for no other reason than it has a pre filter which isnt fitted to any other pump , this little filter could save you alot of money .

Thanks for that, might have a look round for the pierburg one, but if not, i think I can live with it being a bit louder, my fuel pump's always been much louder than I think it should have been, and I'm pretty sure it's origenal, so I expect this new one will be quiter than my old one, even if it is a bit louder than a new bosch one.

Maniac,

Do you have a lift pump in yours?  An '83 shouldn't have but if it fails it is very noisy and sounds like the main fuel pump. Worth checking before you shell out on a new pump to find it's the same.

By the way i've got used fuel pumps.

No, there's no lift pump, had the tank off earlier this year to clean it out so I know that for sure.

Think I'll go with a new one, as I'm pretty sure it's not going to be the easiest of jobs to change, and I'd hate to buy a used one only for it to fail in another year or so.
