please help, petrol leaking everywhere
ok so its a 1.3 driver, nothing changed engine or fuel wise….took it for a drive, back box fell off so i drove it home, left it there, a day later it just started leakign fuel for no reason, and was coming from infront of the spare wheel well?? i assume the exhaust issues r unrelated but there u go..
As soon as i took the battery leads off, the problem begin to lessen until it eventually stopped, the tank still has plenty in it….
checked in the engine bay and a pipe that connects between the carb and somewhere in the middle of the block by the bulkhead had come off, put it back on took it for a drive again…same problem… got home, turned it off…fine, then workign on car for abotu 20 mins it starts going again
Its coming out of a small plastic pipe from the side of the tank, and infront of wheel well, i assume this is som\e type of overflow, is something blocked? what should i look for/fix
I cant find any useful info anywhere as its all for gti's (all injection and completely different)
Fuel is leaking a bit from the carb but not enough to worry about, just bcos its crap more than anything…
hope someone can help as it really is pouring out…
also found a bell shaped peice of rubber on my drive, ive seen it b4, that goes on the end of a pipe, i assume this just directs the fuel overflow as opposed to spraying all the underside of my car?
thanks for any comments or suggestions
thanks very much
Josh

The bell shaped bit (VW part no 321 201 890) should go on the end of the small hose you mention hanging over the back off the tank. Not sure why fuel should come out of it, as you mention it's attached to gravity valve, but try reattaching the end and fitting a new gravity valve. Think you can still get the gravity valve from VW delaers - part no 161 201 753.

thanks for the offer, although if i can get one, im going to go for a new ones, make sure i eliminate this problem area…is this gravity valave the ONLY breather on carbed models? apart from the one that is leaking fuel of course.
im really really stuck with this problem, and haynes is no help whatsoever!

Have you fitted the new gravity valve or fixed the problem yet?
Have you seen this thread http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=20918 ? Got a diagram of the breather system you should have. Gravity valve is no 40 and pipe over the rear of the tank no 9. You could try removing all the breather hoses and checking for damage or blockages.
Cheers
