magnets to clean a fuel tank

just used a big magnet to clean out my tank

heres a quick how to…

fit big magnet to the underneath, lowest point of tank beneath lifter pump

put loads of fuel in

drive around a bit

leave it for 12/24 hours

remove fuel lifter, under rear seat

remove big magnet

use a little magnet securely tied on to a piece of strong string to lift all the rust from your tank which will have gathered at the lowest point.

i used an old speaker magnet for the biggy
and  a fish tank cleaner for the small one.

it works

cheers

the tank was clean as you like, if id had seen rust  inside the tank itself i would have probably flushed it.

I removed my fuel tank the other day.  I can hear some petrol, dirt and rust swishing about in there.  What's the best way to sort out my tank because it looks structurally sound from the outside.  I'm doing a full restoration so i want to do it properly.

Baz

P.S. I still have to take the fuel gauge sender unit out.

Thats a cracking idea!

Years ago I had a clipper cab which had a seriously rusty filler neck… I replaced it after I found out about this being such a problem but not before it had clogged all the fuel lines and destroyed the carb as well!

Wish I'd had thought about that!
would have made cleaning the tank a million time easier!

As a point, could you permently run a magnet on your tank do you think? would make a great little pre filter.  :D

Good idea, but recall thread on this before and dispute over if a magnet can pick up rusty metal or not, i take it the answer is yes then!

absolutely, i found a magnet shaped pile of it on the bottom, and a clear tank,

bear in mind it wont pick up road dust etc.

its more as a damage limitation excercise.
