High octane fuels in EX engines?

Ive just looked on www.cabby-info.com and it says that the EX engine is 10:1 compression and requires 98RON high octane fuel. Does anybody know if this is true?

Cheers

It is unless the ignition timing is adjusted for lower octane petrol… http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=8807&highlight=ron

so are you saying that all gti's an clippers with EX engines should be running on super unleaded unless the timing is changed?? How would i know if my timing is changed?

That's right, have a look here for mk1 engine specs. You can check the ignition timing with a strobe gun, other than that hard to say. If the timing has been adjusted it will be fine to normal and super unleaded. If it hasn't and you use standard octane you might hear the engine pinking at times which isn't good, over time constantly using the wrong octane can cause premature engine wear.
