GTi Cutting Out!!!

My '83 Gti keeps cutting out, runs ok for about 8 miles then just dies.
The previous owner thought it was the fuel pump relay, so i hav been reseating the relays to try an restart. This doesn't always cure the problem tho.
I think it may be a mk2 fuse box i have (not sure if the Gti has the same as a mk2 or not?). Does anyone know which relay is the fuel pump relay?
Or any other faults which may be causing the car to cut out?

hi yes this has been covered loads of times, but the fuse box on the 1.8 is the same as the mk2 upto 1990, the relay is numbered 2 and is the upper left large relay on the fuse box, but u will feel it click when u turn the car over.
it may well be the pump that has failed. or less likely the coil breaking down.
