Fuel Tank removal
Well its MOT time and I've just noticed my fuel tank is leaking. Did try and repair it while on the car where it had rusted through but no joy.
Anyway to cut a long story short I need to remove and replace.
Any pointers on how to get it off anf useful hints???
Also what tanks fit, its a GTI cabriolet yr 89. Do early cab tanks fit and do no cab ones fit???
Looking forward to all your useful suggestions so I can get cracking with this.
Cheers

Early or late Cab tanks should fit. They are BOLTED under the car.
Not sure if they are still available from VAG (mine cost ?120).
The rear axle will have to be dropped.
Tintop tanks WILL NOT fit, they are strapped to the underside, and are smaller capacity.

So early or late cab, can they be Gti or carb as well.
Off to check GSF website although trying to hunt down a good 2nd hand one and save some cash.
Guessed the axle would have to come off….Is this a big job.

late cab is different
early cab is the same as the tin top held on by straps and the later one is bolted on but gti/carb are exactly the same
yes it is the dearer one 8O
why dont you just buy a good second hand one??

dont think you actually need to undo the brake pipes, but why dont you take the oppertunity to change the flexis to braided an renew your fluid at the same time

Changed the fluid a month or so ago so thats alright, and really didn't want to spend any more cash on it, the flexi's are alright to be honest.
Was going by what haynes said to remove. Would think you got to disconnect the brake pipes or they will bend when you drop the axle.

If you want to disconect the axel and keep the fluid in you can clamp the the flexi pipes , My Dad made a set when he learnt his trade, very usefull. I would think the rear axel would be a bit heavy to be supported by flexis alone, prop it up to be safe.

I had my fuel tank out a month or so ago and this is what I did. Mind you, start to finish took me nearly 4 hours. In the rain. And the cold.
You should drink more water.

Cheers guys for info, got it in mom and dads garage but is still cold.
Do you have to take the fuel pump off and all that mlarky off??? and will I need spring compressors to undo the rear coil spring bits to drop the suspension. As if I do its a trip to machine mart first I think.

I didn't need to compress the rear springs to remove them
and you won't need to take the pump off

Yes - leave the springs & pump where they are!
Just be aware that when I disconnected the hoses they were secured with some strange metal clip I'd not seen before (anyone know what they are? :dontknow: ). I replaced them with stainless jubilee clips that I greased the worm thread on first.

Alrighty, well if there to rusted to go back on I'll nip to halfords or GSF and get some jubliee or fuel pipe clips.
