There is a lot of stuff on here about the fuel pump. Do a search. They cost about ?80 from GSF. Don't get a 2nd hand one - if that's the issue.
The pump does make a buzzing noise anyway - however it can be a sign when it gets louder that it's about to go.
If the car is spluttering there could be lots of causes. Again - do a search on the forum.

Shouldnt this be in the fuel section? anyway not too difficult to change pump. best not to have too much fuel in tank then jacking up on pump side for access will push fuel to other side of tank. Assuming a tintop gti here.

is it easy to get to the wiring on the tin top gti fuel pump?
has anyone ever re earthed their fuel pump? i mean run a new line straight to the battery or some where else?

Bad idea to bypass the original wiring and relay, except for test purposes. The relay has a 5th connector which is the tach signal from the coil, this is to prevent the fuel pump running on if the engine stops but the ignition is still on (eg in an accident situation).
