FUEL PROBLEM

just bought a 92 gti cabriolet. Got car home, next day car wont start. Changed pump relay, tried bypassing relay- by placing thick wire between the 2 biggest slots, turned key and no sound of priming.

Before I go any further checking stuff. Would the fuel pump try to prime even if there was no fuel in the tank.

The fuel gauge reading about a quarter full, but the tank sounds empty when tapped from underneath.

Should the fuel pump still make the priming noise even when there is no fuel present?

Thanks

hi, yes it should still buzz, they don't always buzz from ignition on, but should defo buzz when cranking the engine.

If the pump is bypassed is should be on all the time.
