Expensive service=Backfire, Spluttering, HELP!

Took my gti cabby in for its rather a large service..Full belt change, discs pads and braided hoses. prior to this i fitted a new fuel neck myself. However when i jumped back in the car after the service it ran v poorly, reaches a max of 70mph, seems to be misfiring and spluttering. I only spoke briefly to the mechanic, and he said he removed the fuel filter to get the hoses fitted at the rear. Could rust of got in the filter and be blocking it.
-ps i have checked ht leads and sparks al connected.

Please help!!!

removed the fuel filter? you mean you have no fuel filter? could well have done alot of harm to the system if there isn't one. could be that the cam belt is out too.

No sorry the actual filter hasnt been removed, but im pretty it was removed and replaced to get to another part, and was wandering if rust could be in it blocking anything, im going to get under it in half an hour!
Im hoping the belt isnt out of time, anyway you can tell if it is?

to be honest going on what you have said i would guess that timing belt was out,  i would have thought that if you were having a service done the fuel filter would be replaced with new, not sure why he would need to remove filter to get to anything ???
how good is your mechanic?  if it went in running right then it should come out running right ?

He is a good mechanic so i doubt the timing is off, the car is running a bit better now. I just looked under the car and the new hoses run above a small black box that i belive houses some part of the fuel system as it is coming from the tank. I replaced the fuel filler neck, but prior to this could've rust from the old part travelled into this and be blocking it?

so, between it running right, and now not running right, your garage has done a full service inc. cam belt? nothing else has been done. or happened!? then most likely the cam belt is out, or vacuum hose to dizzy is disconnected or something like that. either way, the garage has not done the job properly and you need to give it back to them to sort out.

he probably removed the fuel pump to get to the o/s flexi hose

I think thats probably what it was, well im going to take it in tomorrow morning to them. But its annoying as they already had the car for a day and buses are not a fun way to get to work. Ill check the hoses etc. Could that be why it is idling lower than previously and it is taking longer to start up?

Cheers

Hmm. Does sound like classic crap in the fuel lines/pump/filter to me. Especially the fact that you can't get over 70mph. Get garage to check timing and then look at fuel lines etc.

I ran my tank very, very low a couple of months ago and that seemed to cause a few issues. With cars this age there is bound to be sedament in the tank etc and if this get s stirred up then it can cause issues.

Good luck with it at the garage

The garage took the car back and said the timing was out slightly, reaplced sparks and tuned engine and it now runs better and idles correctly, however they said that its running rich due to a slight leak out of manifold. Its still not running correctly but does run better if that makes sense!

When i put my foot to th floor the car splutters, and the tank has been low…how can i clean this out?cheers for the help

okay ive been fishing for some nice rusty bits for the duration of the day, i flushed the tank several times and removed a ridiculous amount of rust i replaced the fuel filter under the bonnet, and then took the car for a spin.

th car is still spluttering heavily and running very poorly :banghead: , could it be the fuel pump thats packed in?Or any other filters by the tank i dont know about, i also cleaned out the o ring on the lift pump filter at the same time.

please help out as i want to drive it properly!  :dontknow:

Do you mean running redex through the system for the injectors or something like that?
How do you clean the fuel lines?

ones from the metering head to the injectors, remove and blow through with an air-line  and don't forget to replace the injector seals, about ?10 from main stealers, or ?2.00 from gsf, also check the fuel filter again to see if anymore rust has found it's way through, you might end up buying a new pump.

in theory  they pop out, but they can feel like they are welded in. i bought a tool for pulling them out, looks like a l-shape with a slot for a screw-driver  to and a half circle cut out that fits around the injector.

Rito thats brilliant, will head to gsf tomorrow to buy injector seals and possibly that tool elsewhere.

ive been reading a thread, and is it possible that tank pressure may be a factor, as when i put the new fuel filler neck on i replaced the cap and it doesnt lock properly…Cheers!
