exhuast popping like mad at idle, vid inside

i've recently done a 3a bottom end conversion into my mk1 cabby gti.

i only slaved the exhaust on as i had to get it moved out of where i did it, the exhaust was popping and sounding generally cr P at idle with no throttle but i just put it down to poor fitment.

i took it to an exhaust specialist locally and they said it needed moving etc and set it all up.

thing is its still popping at idle and just doesn't sound right to me, its running a piper 285 cam on a solid lifter head, the engine idles a bit lumpy but apart from that sounds fine. is this a prob you get with uprated cams??

i used to have a renault 5 gtt that the exhaust popped a bit but nothing as bad as this.

looking underneath the middle box looks very low to me, i think they may have missed a hanger out, could this add to the prob??

any ideas guys??

take it to your local friendly mot center,put it on the gas tester and look at the co for the mixture,check the Hc's too (unburned fuel) and go from there,i presume it pulls ok?

obviously depending on exhaust and setting up properly, i would expect not far off that from the likes of a bp285 or gs2

yes pulls like a train, i only notice it on tickover, i really hope that its not this bad with the cam it makes the car sound like a right shed :roll:

i had to retard the timing back for 6btdc as it was pinking under load

i'm taking it to stealth next week for a tune on their rolling road so hopefully they'll be able to sort it.

i just wanted to rule out the exhaust being part of the prob, or anything else obvious i can sort myself before i went.

by chance, when you were doing the bottom end did you take the time to strip, clean and rebuild the head?
