What bulbs have you got?

Its all in the interpritation when it come to "seriously reduced visibility" for instance someone from the "PEN 15" peugeot/renault club may feel the need to drive around with Neons???? underneath lit up, blue washer jets??????? fog lights on all the time so "it looks like an M3" with all manner of tat from ripspeed/halfrauds hanging off the car! in my experience dubbers arent the sort of people that have 22 cibbie oscars bolted on the front of the motor, are they??? well anyway if you drive around with the above mentioned pelt illuminated then you really are asking for ?30 reasons not too! when it comes to wattage of bulbs who cares? the law says 55 watts, unless your mot tester is really anal? then hows he/she gonna know ? as for the police they are not allowed to start taking your car to bits to find out what watage a bulb is ffs, so dont sweat it, if you know its illegal and get caught take the fine, if not just use standard bulbs and stop w****** so much

and no tian they dont cope ok, more people are killed on rural roads at night than any other time

Point taken!

I understand that according to the issued stats on road traffic accidents rural roads are dangerous places. I also understand first hand what the roads are like in your neck of the woods! My last comment on this is a simple one. It's a speed limit, not a speed target and you can be done for speeding even if well below the posted speed limit.

When I was last in Cornwall I ensured that I didn't go faster than I needed to and could always stop on the bit of road I could see. (The wife insisted)

Funny that, I used to watch loads of Soaps, Brookside, Eastenders, Coronation Street etc and then one day I just stopped!!! Just like that. I can't stand them now. I can't even stand being in the same room if one's on the telly.

I must be Soap Phobic.

This is a public forum and people come here for information, not heresay or opinion, but information. If you can't give them that information then don't feed them bullsh*t. Don't say anything at all. The guy originally asked a question. I seem to be the only person that took the time to give him the facts. If you don't agree with the law, take it up with your MP.

Some of the people on here will be old enough to remember 40W headlights. I imagine there was similar mutterings about dazzling when they were changed. Now modern cars are fitted with HID systems that give lighting equivalent to an 80W. I don't hear anyone mentioning those, but fit similar lighting ability to your mk1 and suddenly your the devil. Beat him, beat him, boo…….

yo yo yo yo, calm down dear its just a commercial…..anyway appologise for stating "the law says 55w" what i meant was most standard vehicles come with 55watt bulbs as the norm as this is deemed sufficient, but obviously if you live in a rural area with minimal street lamps etc then the need to see safely is more, but i would draw the line at copying the lamp set up on Juha Kankenans rally car!!!!! noise is the best road safety device!! people should hear you before see you :D

Well that was fun!

In answer to your question Rob_Waite - I have just installed Osram Silverstars - well worth the ?14 & I am sure they will give you all the light you will need.

I am in Norfolk & its usually as dark as pitch up here.  The H4 Silverstars perform great.  Try 'em and see (unintended pun - sorry)
