Starting problem - please help!

Hi,

Just tried to start my car and although the ignition lights come on and the fuel pump is going, the car won't turn over at all and there is no click or sound from the starter motor.

I have checked the battery and that is sound.  How can you check whether it is the solinoid or the actual ignition switch, or could it be something else entirely?

Glad for any help you can offer.

Ali.

Don't know the answer to your questions but I would start by checking relevant fuse for the starter motor… Do you have an immobiliser fitted?

I'd agree with that, however are you sure your battery is ok? I've had snags starting in the past and wilst the battery may seem ok unless it's got plenty of juice you can get nothing out of the starter.  Have you got another you can use to test or a battery charger?

the quickest way to test your battery is switch your lights on then try to start the engine if the lights go dim then its the battery if they stay the same then its the starter

Starting probs

Thanks for help , diagnosed it as a faulty ignition key barell. Apparently they do give trouble on lots of vws.
Any one replaced these before ? it looks tricky to seperate and reconect the key hole mechanics to the electric base.
           Thanks again Ali
