Which year car? The earlier fuseboxes are known to be dodgy. I fixed mine through a combination of replacing and cleaning up the fuses and holders; and cleaning/wiggling one of the connectors at the back of the fusebox.

There's a separate fuse pre-82 too. Does it have blade style fuses, or the older continental (like a little pill or cigar shape) fuses? And how many?

You have a middle of the era fuesbox, the series 1s had a smaller continental fuse fusebox, then the early Series 2s have yours, then 1983 (I think? - Y reg onwards) have a later one with blade fuses.

There's no relay - that's part of the problem - the current for the main beam goes up to the stalk which switches main/dipped beam, and back to the fusebox in the connectors at the back. I think its a yellow or red coloured connector. Worth pulling it out, giving a spray of WD40, a general wipe up/nosey around there. Probably worth disconnecting the battery, in case you have any dodgy wiring back there.

so this yellow/red connector, is it behind the ignition cowling  on the stalk, or behind the fusebox
cheers

Sounds like it could be a grounding issue or just dodgy wiring
