There's a separate fuse pre-82 too. Does it have blade style fuses, or the older continental (like a little pill or cigar shape) fuses? And how many?

There's no relay - that's part of the problem - the current for the main beam goes up to the stalk which switches main/dipped beam, and back to the fusebox in the connectors at the back. I think its a yellow or red coloured connector. Worth pulling it out, giving a spray of WD40, a general wipe up/nosey around there. Probably worth disconnecting the battery, in case you have any dodgy wiring back there.
