Help Please!! Intermitant fuel pump / relay issues!!!!

PLEASE HELP.

I've started work on my Mk1…. and recently took her for MOT - passed with the usua; bits and pieces… but after a week or so of not using her I noticed a whirring sound…. the fuel pump was active and a loud whirring noise could be heard.. I jumped in and put the ign key in and it stopped… then started / stopped . would not start… then the fusebox relay( not sure whic hone sounds like a couiple of them) started to frantically turn on and off…

No it will not start - battery charging as it is nearly dead…

Now the car relays / fuel pump intermitantly turn on and off with NO KEY IN THE IGNITION!!!

Ign key in the barrel… ocacsional whirring of the pump… relay madness….

Help me.. is my car possesed?

Dodgy relays? New barrel????!

What do I need to buy? :banghead:  :dontknow:

Yep, is pretty damp around that area… should I remove it and dry it out? Do you think it could be the ign barrel at all?

Why is my fuel pump and the realays going crazy - the dampness?

Thanks!!! :)

I recently had the same symptom of the clicking fuel pump relay.   Both of my fuel pumps (CIS) worked correctly when 12V was directly applied to them.  And I tested a couple of extra fuel pump relays which ruled out a dodgy relay.

My problem came from the distributor cap which was causing the coil to not receive the pulse correctly.  Terminal 1 on the coil picks the fuel pump relay.   So check the cap, rotor, spark plug wires and the ignition coil as your next stage of troubleshooting.

In my case, once I changed the cap and rotor, everything worked fine again.
