CHANGING CLOCKS ASSEMBLY

Having put up with the oil warning screeching for too long, I have managed to pick up a full set of clocks, gauges etc. My existing assembly is a Motometer set and the one I have just bought is a VDO set.

I have searched the forum for my question and couldnt find anything, so I hope I am not boring anyone here by repeating, BUT…..

Mostly everything works OK, except I have 3 slight problems:-

1. The green turn indicator light is always dull. When in the up or down position it changes to bright green and the indicators dont flash. (Hazzards work fine, as does the light).

2.  The temperature gauge goes to MAX and the red warning light flashes constantly.

3. The MFA outside temperature reads -31 degrees - ARCTIC WEATHER?!

Is the VDO OK to use in place of the Moto? or have I got other more sinister things going on?

Thanks

What i have read, check or add a new earth to the clocks, also the voltage reg on the rear of the clocks can go, causing them problems. Its the little black thing with 3 legs on the plastic circuit board. Its held on with 1 screw and the legs arnt soldered. Some push in idea.

Also the earth stap to the engine so that the electrical items can fire up. eg. Temp/OIL sensors

Hope it helps a little.

Thanks for that Sat1.

As ytou suggested, I removed the 'devils fork' and both the fuel and temp gauges went to the 'park' position. I then installed the fork from the old assembly and it was back to the old problem. So I guess I can count that out.

Sorry for being ignorant, but where would I check or add new earth straps to on clocks?

This is really strange, when the old clocks were in all was OK, except for the screeching!

Looks like it pointing to an ground problem. I know these cars can catch you out..lol

The plug that inserts to the clocks have a plastic membrain circuit board that wraps around a wide former. The plug have an assorted colour of wires and one of them is ground to chasis. Fist thing i would check is the ground to chasis. Using a multimeter with continunity check see if there any resistance. Should be a dead short. my meter would read about 0.30 ohms. Anything much more 5-1k ohms you might have a problem. IF you get open circuit then then the wire must have broken.

From there you will know if the earth to the clocks is ok and its the clocks at fault. DONT hold me to ransom and from memory the earth wire should be Brown on older VWs. All earths are brown i think!. On Vauxhall Brown is LIVE! how bad is that?

Any how give it a go and see what you find

Hope it helps
