Cabriolet inner front lights

Are these driving lights or fog lights?

From what I can gather, either could be fitted.  My vehicle is fitted with Hella H4's as the main beam light and inners are encoded Hella 24560 R8.

I suspect these to be driving lights but does anyone know definitively?  A search on numerous websites including Hella's is not illuminating (sorry about the pun).

errr…. do they come on with the main beam or fog light switch??

Fog ones have distinct vertical lines embossed in the glass.

Before we have discussed this and decided that the factory only ever fitted fogs, spots are dealer fitted or by owners at a later date.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Thanks for the response.  My apologies if I have dragged up a hairy old chestnut.  I used the search function but either came up with zip or 50 pages of results.

My lights have the "distinct" vertical lines & appear to be oginal spec fit - but are only activated on high beam - regardless of the position of the fog lamp switch - which makes them (as fog lamps) about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

I'll get the auto-elec guys to have a look at them & change to driving lights as appropriate.

the inner lights on a mk1 are spot lamps they come on with main beam and go off on dip beam, if i remember correctly, fog lamps (by law!!) have got to be fitted below the bumper and have deffinatly got to be lower than the headlamps

Not sure about this nad don't want to talk out of turn BUT!!!!

Merc' and Porsche have fogs built into the main cluster. For Mercs this goes way back to the eighties and still holds true. Porsche are still doing it now as well.

Tian :dontknow:

Oh, as for my inner lamps, they are as the lamps on an old shape Subaru which were placed below the bumper, they are driving/spot lights. I think.

mk1 campaigns and drivers had fog lights in the grill, not driving lamps as standard.
what year is the cab? is it the later all in one grill fitted with the clipper kit? or the same as a mk1 gti?

Don't quote me on this, but I think the legal requirement is that foglights are under 36" from the ground.

in with paul on this one, i was looking through mot book at work the other week about this as we had to fit a set of driving lamps for a customer on an old beetle, but we could only fit this above the bumper due to them being driving lamps (looked weird!) and fog lamps to be fitted below bumper (specific measurements are given) otherwise theres no point in them being fog lamps as there job is to point on the ground and go underneith the fog thus giving you more visability.
will have another proper look though when i go back to work  :(  too much time of now dont want to go back!!

happy new year!

Hi Volkswarren,

My vehicle was first rego'ed on 7th March 1985 - making it a 1984 manuafcture. It is on a DX coded engine number.

Not sure about your enquiry about the grill but my best guess is that it is the same as the Mark 1 grill.

I'll post a couple of photo's.

Definitely?  Early-1800 indicates that if the lights have vertical lines embossed in the glass & they are original factory fit spec these would be fog lights…

I must say the beam emitted is a bit narrow for foggies.

Does the E1 coding have any relevance? Sorry about all the Q&A's?

Many thanks for the responses BTW & thanks to Tian for the tip on Osram H4 Silverstars.  These arrived day-before-yesterday.

As Volkswarren says, driving lights.  Had a look at the fogs on my Campaign, the vertical lines are much more pronounced (you cant really see the bulb) and the code no is 8364 r19.  Other markings on there are…at the top of the lense it has "top" and lettering tn15 also sae f80.  The vw part no. is also embossed on the lense between 9 & 7 o'clock.

E1 means that it is approved for use on eurpean roads.

Cool - thanks matie.  I've now got Osrams Silvers installed - see how we go (amazing what you find - on the drivers side I found a nice new shiney Hella and on the passenger side a doggie old Brand "X")

Yep - definitely spots!  I installed the Osram silverstars - quantum leap & well worth the ?14.

As I was mucking about I blanked off the main headlights with pieces of cardboard in order to view the lighting effect on the inner lights alone- and a beam shone out like a ribbon of sunshine for about 100 metres when all around was dark.

So there ya go - the inner lights are original fit spots.  Hella part spec as detailed above.
