Alternator

Morning all,

I need to replace the alternator on my 86 1.8 Gti cabbie.  I think the current one is 55amp but is it worth going up to 65amp?  I only say this as I have quite a powerful stereo on board and I want a better charge to the battery as the car is rarely used.  Is the 65amp a similar size to the 55 and will I need to make any modifications to the mount?
And finally, prices seem to be around ?60 + P&P but higher for Bosch.  Are there any other brands I should consider that you think will be suitable?

Cheers

Danny

GSF and ECP don't stock 55s anymore.  I'll probably go for 65 Amps but is it worth going any higher than that?

I'm pretty sure you need different hardware to mount the 90A alternator, 65A is the biggest which fits in the stock location. If you bought a 90A alternator from a Mk2 Golf or something, you'd need the cover which fits over the water pump, and different water pump bolts, too. Maybe more stuff too?

Thanks Paul.
65A it is then.  Have been offered a 90A from a mate's old passat but think I'll pass now if it involves altering mounts/brackets etc;
