Don't knock the price if you own one yourself!
I would take a copy of the advert and use it as evidence with your insurance company should they ever wish to question your valuation

It does look tidy - but how they think it's worth £12k is beyond me.
I'd like to see a pic under the bonnet too, I'm guessing it's not as tidy as the exterior?

My L plate black Sportline cost me a grand last year and if that one is worth £12k then so is mine :-)
Only difference is I don't have mohair roof but everything else is done :-)

I thought cabbys went for half the price as only half a car
No, in fact it's the opposite, less of it so it makes it rarer… Like values of gold and mud…

The seller is a member on here. Good luck with the sale Andy. I don't see why this Sportline can't be worth around the £12K mark. The only way these cars will increase in value is if there are sales like this example.
Traders out there are asking £12 - £25K for S2 tin tops. The first person who advertised a tin top for £25K probably waited for a long time to sell it, but once it sold there was a new benchmark for similar examples.

And the trend of these high prices isn't only in VW circles…

If you advertise in the ballpark for buyers with deep pockets then chances are you'll find one….eventually….
Right, I'm off to polish my car!

I hope he does acheive his asking price but IMO its way to high.
The prices that are being asked throughout the classic car world for some modern classics is OTT and Mr Average has no chance of affording them.
Warwick had his 18k mile mint Sportline up for sale for £8k a couple of years back and that wouldnt sell IIRC.
My friend just had his 18000 mile Rivage leather with 1 owner and totally original and in new condition up for sale for £9500 and nobody bought it and IMO thats worth more than the Sportline in question.
Again I hope he acheives his asking price or close to it as then my 97000 mile car in VGC should fetch the same.

That was Dal's Rivage wasn't it? I couldn't believe the price was only £9.5K. In the right sale it'd easily be worth £20K but again you'd have to sit and wait for the right buyer.
There was a guy on here knocking about for ages with an S2 GTI asking close to £8k, it was for sale for over a year and IMO over priced but it eventually was bought and the new owner registered on here.
I know exactly what your saying, I love Mk1's and wouldn't want to be priced out of the market for buying another but as time goes on the prices can only appreciate.
Whatever happens don't sell it!

It's all a moot point, especially as I heard the 1.6 carb gl cabby is the one to get even more so when in grey

It was Dave's Rivage and its as good as original condition than you can get IMO.
He did have a buyer, 1 of my scaffolders was going to get it but I am delighted that Dave has kept it as its his baby and means so much to him.
He even only got rid of the original tyres last year as the side walls were too perished
AND I am not selling, just the opposite as plans are in place for next winters refurb
