I've written this on another of my posts but thought it might be nice to share this on 'What did you do with your MK1 today'.

Now as I mentioned a day or two back, my car was with my Mechanic this week for a few jobs.
I gave him a list and basically an open check to do what he felt necessary.
He owns a Sportline and is straight as an arrow, wouldn't know how to rip someone off.

So long story and and a mega hangover later, here's what he did and what he charged me.

Full engine tune even using the correct 'Sun Tuner' analyzer or what ever it's called.
Adjusted the timing and cam belt
Checked all brake lines and hoses (could replace if he saw fit)
Replaced the brake fluid (asked him to replace any or all brake components if necessary)
Adjusted the clutch
Adjusted the gear linkage
Adjusted handbrake
Replaced right side rear wheel bearing set
Removed the rear shoes, cleaned and greased everything and took the shine off the shoes etc…
Replaced Rotor Arm but Dizzy was still fairly new so didn't need to be changed
Installed a 'Hirschman Electric Aerial' (an original one which you can buy new from 'Conrad' just has a slightly different Part No.)
Check the fuel neck and pipe and could replace as and if required
Changed the standard steering wheel for one from a Golf MK1 Genesis model
Checked the car for any corrosion/rust for the next MOT which is due in August (couldn't find any and he's the one doing to MOT)
Supplied me with a spare original VW alternator belt
Basically went over the car with a fine tooth comb as if it was his.

So what did he charge me for all of that?
Well he charged me 162.87 GBP inclusive of parts, material and time.

Living here in Austria, I can tell you that is so ridiculously cheap to be almost a joke and certainly embarrassing.  :$
VW here in Vienna are now charging 115.00 GBP per hour plus parts and material.  :o
I would have paid more than that for the brake fluid change alone!

So I gave him 190 GBP and allowed him and his Son to give me one mega hangover in to the bargain.
All in all I have no complaints whatsoever!

Your not wrong there, to be honest I was seriously embarrassed, that's why I went for a Birthday drink as it was the Sons Birthday in the hope I could buy the beer and Schnapps but they wouldn't let me pay for that either.  :P

It's tradition here in Austria that the Birthday Boy buys ALL the drinks!

I hadn't been happy with my relays for upgraded light looms etc so called into local autospark who showed me replacement micro relays.I hadn't seen these before and was quite impressed with them being half the size of mine.
Today I hooked up some and replaced  some old connections so all in all progress made.

Definitely took it home at night.  All that sand and sea air, there might not been much left of it after 3 days!

As for the RNLI bucket, I managed to get just over £35.  It wasn't too bad with the weather like it was.  Also the cars in the pageant were actually placed about a mile away from the main Bournemouth Pier where all the action was happening.  If I could have had the car at that end then I think I would have made a lot more money.  There were 1/2 a million visitors over the weekend so I would definitely have made a mint for the RNLI!

That's an interesting point regarding the government funding.  Funnily enough the RNLI do not want government funding.  With that comes government decision making…  :-s

Last night I made the car all Fast 'N' Loud again and put the 16" Oz wheels back on…

Great effect with the paint, don't think I could get a result like that.

Where did you get the cubby from that replaces the radio - I've just got the LM/MW Blaupunkt radio in mine, but it s causing rattles in the dash, would like to replace like yours.
