GTI Grill Badges

Post

Oh wise and assembled - I need your assistance but no sniggering please.

My GTI grill badge ('82 Tintop) is sad and faded so I bought myself another from fleabay…but it didn't fit. No matter….watched a few on eBay and got myself another a few days ago. It's the same as the first - completely different mounting from the original on the car.

So - where am I going wrong. Do I keep buying ones sold as being for Mk1's but are actually for Mk2's or is my grill wrong or what?

Yes - I know that having been stung once I should have taken the original off the car, figured out the mounting and ensured that the second was the same before buying it but that's just obvious (and a bit too much like hard work).

Picture below shows the mounting for the original (on the right) and the two replacement ones. All genuine VAG and in nice condition….just don't flaming fit!!!

richievr - thank you; that was my suspicion but didn't think I'd be so unlucky to find two sellers in a row who didn't know what they were selling. To be fair they are both in nice condition so will add the best to my VW grill badge collection (yes, I am that sad).

Swerve - yes, this has been on my eBay watch list but given everything else that needs doing on the car at the moment I didn't really want to blow £55 on a grill badge. Having said that, have spent a combined £30 on the two Mk2 versions and probably a further £18 if I got one from VW Heritage then it will have cost me that anyway and should have spent my money properly in the first place! Always the way! Grrrr.

Hummmm, the VR6?!!!

If you need the full one re-silvering, contact chortle to see if he's got a kit.

Spray the faded GTI badge silver or chrome, whichever you prefer. When dry smear a thin layer of grease on the parts you want to stay silver and spray the badge black. When dry wipe the grease off to leave a perfect looking badge.

To bring this to a happy close - chortle  kindly sent me (twice due to the incompetence of the postal service) a kit to re-do my badge. I was sceptical of this solution originally but will let the results speak for themselves - am really pleased so thank you very much Carl!! Top man and a great solution at a very reasonable price!
