Looks like you had to cut the cap/nut off the top of the strut?
For anyone else doing this job, get some some big stillsons and loosen the nut/cap while the strut is still attached to the car if you don't have a big vice on a bench, when the wheel is in the air you can just about fit them in between the spring coils, it gives you plenty of leverage as its usally done up pretty tight.
