Cleaning the interior grime.

Post

After 26 years!

No doubt others have tried this and there's maybe a post somewhere but lets for now assume there's not.  ;)

When I sit in my Mk1 it looks fairly clean most of the time but of course when you really look close there's deep down grime on the door cards and just about everywhere. What can one expect after all this time!  :o

So I tried an number of things from warm detergent to the expensive stuff, in four years I've easily spent £100 and guess what? Yep none of them could do the job especially because I must have the Matt finish like when the car was new.  :(

Now I bought a Mk6 estate a couple of months back (yes white of course) which on the face of it to the untrained eye looks new. But I noticed that all the air vents were covered in grime and it was unhealthy to say the least.

So there me one day pondering the easiest way to get all that off and I thought of surgical wipes with the aid of cotton wool buds. 70% alcohol and sure to get the cr#p off and leave retain the Matt finish.

It did an okay job but buying those wipes a 100 at a time seemed to me the expense option.
Then I had my eureka moment and went to my local chemist and asked for bootle of surgical spirit 70%, 200ml cost me £3 and it worked a real treat.

Finally to my point.
I just sat in my Mk1 and the inside top of the doors look more grey than black.
Took a micro cloth, dipped it in the alcohol and did a test area as seen here.
Now the sun is out and we have 22 degrees so I've had to stop because the interior is now to darn hot.

Now that test area took all of 2 minutes, trust me the photos don't do it justice and I'm gob smacked.  :o
I'm sure when I do it again and spend a bit more time, maybe use a tooth brush as well it will transform the interior!

On the second photo compare far left to far right.
What a cheap and easy solution, just can't understand why it's taken me 4 years to think of it.  :$

So give it a try, do a test first and only do it when the interior is not hot!  ;)
