OK We've got an 82 cabrio with what apears to be an original interior which we' d like to keep and clean but the driver seat is badly sagging. Found replacement foams for the bucket seats but this looks and feels more like the rubberised horsehair which I thought they's stopped using by this point. Any ideas guys?

If you take a gander at werk34.de
You can even use the etka to find the proper cushions.
https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/
Just drill it to the cabriolet 82. You don't have the sport seats, so don't order them for the base or seat bottom or back if they say for sport seats.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Thanks Briano. I didn't know about either of those sites (#newbie)
Is it easy enough to replace the cushion pads without destroying the seat covers?

Yes and no. You will need hog ring pliers, and good needle nose. While I have never taken apart a flat or non-sport seat, they shouldn't bee too difficult.
You may want to pay attention to the seat back cables, as well as the glides that you have as you may want to replace them as well.
in the archive section I have how'tos for a 93 that I had, one a tone of interior fix's as well as seat repairs.
there is a link in my signature scroll through at your pleasure, most are for 90 digifant cabriolets, but the body and other mechanicals are similar.

I think the link Briano1234 posted above for the seat foams is the wrong type of foams for your car.
The early cars had a flatter seat unless it was a GTi then they got the sport seats.
I think you need this type.
https://www.werk34.de/en/foam-seat-pad-front-seat-bottom-section-from-08-75-881-171-375-c.html
I've seen other places selling them but can't seem to find them at the minute

Possibly this one?

Or follow Briano1234 guide and repair what’s there with some new foam.

I forgot that the two I posted as the seat back, Yes he would need the seat back and seat bottom.

I ended up picking up a pair of good condition Mk2 seats onto which I will put my covers (if they clean up ok).
MK2 seats aren't a straight fit due to the handle being on the other side. I've made a solution to that if anyone is interested or has access to a 3D printer
