Instead they of the car costing me about £500 a month in tax I have decided to take the money. Surprisingly about £500 a month take home. Want to keep most of this to pay off some debt faster and get back to the ways of saving.
So budget is £4K for a 15 year old max below 100k miles big run around that could fit in a spare bonnet or rugby tackle bags or lots of cases for the family holiday.
I'm thinking Nissan x trail, e class estate or maybe an x5.
I recoup my outlay in under a year and the rest of the time the money is all mine (laughing with a villains voice 😂)
What wisdom does the best car group ever have to share on this one ?

I work from home normal times and when not at home I fly to different paces so mileage is really low.
The nice car which I will use for work will be the wife’s car mainly thinking GLA or Q3. She has a Fiat 500 coming to the end of pcp in March so makes sense to spend maybe 50 extra a month their and get a 2 year old merc. Low mileage.
My one is just the one used the make the run to the tip
Thought about a golf but want and need something bigger. Lad plays rugby and I manage the team so need to fit a lot of tackle pads, balls etc and fed up of squeezing things into corners or only taking part of what I want.
Did see a discovery and a Range Rover last night but high mileage and a bit older. Not sure they would be as reliable as a 2007/8 xtrail with about half the miles.
Line up will be.
Mk1 - my joy car
Merc - the nice car and my occasional work car
Other - the utility car, go anywhere, collect anything car.

Yes it's a Skoda, its a pretend SUV (Golf sized) but it's £150 quid a month with 1 month upfront , no tax, no new tyres/brakes/battery and with variable servicing will need 1 @£180 service and if you are worried a 3yr 15,000 car will fail its 1st MOT on something out of warrenty hand it back 1 week before MOT due.

£20 year road tax is also a bonus Probably out your budget though as it’s best to get one from 2015 onwards as undated dash, sat nav and better camshaft as early models can suffer from a worn camshaft.

A full bag of rugby balls takes up a lot of room (the joys of rugby coaching eh!). Easily half the boot of my A4 Avant, then add tackle bags, you're best with a van! Or Maybe a crewcab pickup.Auto Trader Vans - New and Used Vans For Sale
Thinking outside the box for you there!
If I could I'd have a van alongside the sensible family a4 and the golf, oh, and the MGB, just to use as a slag-wagon/weekend adventure vehicle.

A pal of mine runs a vehicle delivery company and garage business and swears by them (he does not sell them!). He does 100k per year in Europe and here with a trailer pulling 3t and reckons most S. Korean cars are bullet proof -which is why Taxi firms love them. Their cheaper to buy and more reliable than European cars he says.
Original X Trail?
I run a 2006 Xtrail 2l Diesel the made in Japan model (the proper estate car version not the current SUV rubish) and its been brilliant. Drive it like I stole it… and its used like a landrover which it replaced so it has a hard life to say the least. Owned it ten years now and apart from tyres/pads/discs (still on original exhausts) it has only cost me 2 brake calipers, wishbones and recently the first biggish bill £400 for the Emission valve. Can be bought for £1500 or less and there are low mileage ones about. Huge load area. Cheap to run and cheap enough to bin after a few years.

Sadly the vorsprung Durch technic stuff iover 5 years old is woefully unreliable nowadays.

Xtrail pre 2007 is weird with speedo in the middle so will look at second gen version. Basically the same car with a face lift inside and out.
Decided no old merc and will look cheaper as will only be short term for a year or two before returning to nearly new motors
Quite excited to have a bit of a work horse over a more precious motor.
