HELP REQUIRED PASSANGER FOOTWELL FULL OF WATER 1990 CABRIOLET

Post

After the rain last night i opened the passenger door on my cabriolet to find a nice puddle of water. Dont think its coming in through roof and have just had brand new window scrapers so any ideas please water smelt stagnant too. What comes of throwing the old mats away must of been hiding the problem

Check the two drain holes under the bonnet, below the windscreen are not blocked up.

Down in the corners of the bulkhead tray.
They are in the far left and right corners about 2" in diameter and will have a rubber sleeve going down about 5" long and tapered at the bottom.
One is easy to spot (DS) but the other will be under the Management unit and out of sight.
Need to unbolt the 'MU' and move slightly out of the way.

I had this problem last summer when I had a paint job done by VW, they put the car through the car wash the Burke's and the whole floor pan filled up with water.
I could of keep fish in it!

windscreen lower left corner. give it a tap with the heal of your hand.

door drain holes clear them out with a rod

top of chassis leg, small hole that should be covered by tape but most likely isn't any more.

after that, take the carpet out (really not difficult). sprinkle of talc then get your better half your mate to spray the car with a hose, look for the leak.

it is normally the drain holes in the scuttle as said previously.

tap the windscreen is to reseat the window rubber.  you've just had a new windscreen, I wonder where the leak is from. :ocf_emoticons__icon_rolleyes:.

do you park on a hill?

as said, carpet out and sprinkle of talc to look for the leak.  quickest way.

hes had new window scrapers….

hes right though you need the carpet out to dry it off firstly, then to visually see the leak, which you will if theres as much water as you say.

the OP says new windscreen fitted, that would be the first place I would look.  they are difficult to fit right (most fitters don't have the skills anymore, modern cars don't have seals).

they need to be strung in, if the seal doesn't flick over correctly they will leak, this can be checked easily.
they then need a gentle tap at the corners to pop the seal back tight to the frame.  this usually gets ignored or forgotten.  seen one guy use a rubber mallet, I prefer the heal of my hand.  this would be the first thing to look at for me.

I'd also check the plastic sheet on the inside of the door cards. If that's been torn or incorrectly refitted water can pour in through the air vent part of the door. Don't always trust window scrapers to keep the rain out…they don't!

Lower left corner of the windscreen. Do as I have been telling you to do from the start and and tap the corner of the windscreen with the heel of you hand to seat the window and seal properly.
If it isn't that then look at the speaker wires to the doors, assuming you haven't got gaitors then the cable needs to loop down and up in the open door jam so that water can drip off.  Still most likely as has been said above though.

ive done the windscreen with heel of hand even used my rubber tent peg hammer and went round whole window definetely not through the doors its somewhere behind the dash

I painted the whole of the bulkhead behind the electronic ignition thingy with a sort of bitumen paint that's used to waterproof failing felt roofs. Ithink a crack had started there although it was difficult to see. It did the job. If it's coming in where you say it is you do need to get it sorted pronto as it will likely mess your fuse box up terminally ( I know that's stating the obvious).

do you have a scuttle tray in? maybe going down the blower if not? If its not the window the im 99% its in the scuttle area, maybe rust under the bichimen pads?

At this point you are going to have to start removing stuff for a clear view. Start with carpet and knee bar.

also you say a grommit is missing from the scuttle pass side, is there a grommit directly below it letting water through, you have mentioned a wet grommit previously...
