Confussed....Standard or Modded?

Post

Hi all!!

(After a very long time away i have finally remembered my password) so my question to the masses is…

I currently have a 1987 D Reg 1.8 Clipper Cabrio with a seemingly genuine 95k on the clock and its in what can only be described as 95% original condition. Sure, its had a new vinyl hood, full exhaust, front discs and pads, rear drums and shoes, starter, alternator etc… but it has all its original trim, parcel shelf, interior and so on, and is totally standard from new. It really is very tidy indeed. I even have the original steel wheels. The only real defect is a fairly average respray on the drivers door at some point. It was dry stored for 14 years before i got it, then i have covered about 200miles in 5 years or so since.

I am wondering if it is worth notably more £s in such a standard and original condition or if that doesn't make a huge difference on these cars? I am intending to sell it as i don't use it (and mainly feel i am depriving someone of a real usable classic). But it seems that the only people who have shown an interest in it to date have been intending to "slam it on coilovers and stick splitrims on" etc..

Am i wasting my time hanging on for a real enthusiast or is this what normally happens to these mk1s now? It seems such a shame to ruin such an original car to me, but that said i need to let it go to a new home.. :ocf_emoticons__BangHead:

Keep it standard that way its timeless soemone will come along.

When i bought my car i was told a few buyers were turned down as they wanted to modify it :)

Standard gets my vote mate but it's your car at the end of day. Do with it as ou see fit. Don't be forced into doing something to it you don't want to do :)

Ah thanks guys! My faith is restored!! I was starting to think I was the only one who attached any sort of sentimental value to keeping it as VW intended! Don't get me wrong, I do like to see some of the modded cars out there, but for me that's something you do once the originality has been lost.
