75 to 90 was for me the golden period for hot hatches, mk1 mk2 Golfs, same with the Astra gte,  xr3 xr2  pug 205s etc, after this it seems as tho manufacturers made them heavier and too comfortable and boring too look at…..just a thought

I don't blame just the manufacturers. Regulations killed it. I remember noise emissions and co2 killing the escort cosworth and before that crash tests adding weight and bulk. All well intentioned and correct but took the character away and thrill of avoiding the off

I think the problem was they were all stolen to easily or crashed, insurance went through the roof and people stopped buying them.
I agree with you about the water down version they came up with later, if you look at a Mk4 golf Gti and a bog standard Mk4 golf it's hard to tell the difference!
At least VW did start to make a better GTi with the Mk5 then I think they got it wrong with the looks of the Mk6 and 7
I will still much rather drive my Mk1 as far to many electric and sensor problems with later VWs. Keep it simple as less thing to go wrong.

Edit.. I did get the wrong model numbers as they are starting to look the same..

I agree pretty much with Mark on this one especially when you compare Mk6 to the Mk7.

As a lot of you know I own a Mk6 TSI, DSG 7speed, Highline.

Well when I was back in the U.K last month for the AGM I rented a Mk7 TSI, Highline with 10k on the clock.
Cost an arm and a leg and now I wish I hadn't.

Chalk and cheese and put me off buying one for life.
To be fair it didn't have DSG nor all the extras of mine but putting that to one side it feels cheap and nasty with a lot more plan plastic.

The seating is not as comfortable and the cloth is a basic tweedy material and not plush like the Mk6.

The engine has less power with 138bhp verses 160bhp and you can feel it through the range.

After 10 days of driving over 1,000 miles I got it back to Heathrow I thought to myself that's one expensive Skoda!

Not trying to offend anyone with a 7 or a Skoda and maybe my expectations were too high but boy what a disappointment.

As for the so called motoring correspondents that had raved over it in comparison to the Mk6 should be ashamed of themselves!

Off my soap box now and back on topic. 😂👍🏼
