Oil Pressure Light and Buzzer
I have a standard 1.8 gti. Last week the oil pressure buzzer and warning light came on. I know there are a lot of topics on this but mine is slightly different in that it comes on at tick-over and only when the oil is warm / hot NOT over 2000 RPM. If I rev the car the buzzer stops and light goes out.
The car has fresh oil and genuine filter and I have changed BOTH pressure switches but the problem is still there. I guess the next thing to do is to actually test the oil pressure. What should the pressure be ?
The engine runs very smooth, no knocking and uses no oil. Everything seems fine apart from the light and buzzer.
Any other ideas ?
Many Thanks,
BigMoose

Have you got the correct grade oil ? should be SAE 15W/50 or 20W/50.

Reading 6 BAR at 2000RPM from cold and 2.5BAR at 2000RPM at 80C
At tickover at 80C it drops to about 1.5 BAR
Does this all sound OK and point to an electrical problem ?
Thanks

Anyone got a photo of the 'L' shaped circuit you can replace?

Just new here.
Found the site via google.
I think the following is the L-shaped thing: control unit for oil pressure control = parts number 321.919.064.K
But how do I take the gauge cluster apart?
This seems to be risky.

Now let's check if the part is available and I don't make a mess of it ;-)

I'm having the same issue.
When driving I have :-
6 bar cold at 2000 rpm
1.6 bar warm at 2000 rpm
1 bar warm on idle.
I fitted a new Smith's mechanical pressure gauge so these readings should be accurate.
While driving warm I can achieve 2 bar but at 2500 rpm.
My buzzer sounds at 2100 revs with 1.6 bar.
Is this oil pressure too low?
When the revs increase over 2300 rpm the buzzer stops.
Cheers for any advice, Mark

but where is the high pressure switch, and where are you measuring the pressure? the 1.8 bar switch shoudl be in the filter housing, and you will usually see a bit higher pressure here than you do at the head.
if the switch is in the right place then I would say you need to get the oil system looked at asap

I love how they call the thing a high pressure switch, denoting that you have hi pressure pressure issue when it is, "low pressure above 2000K" in actuality…
It reminds me of the Reverse Polish Notation on older HP and TI calculators.

10w40 semi synth is all these old lumps needs in our climate, if you need special oil to solve pressure issues then your engine or oil pump is worn and needs a rebuild/replacement

I swapped the mechanical gauge into the oil filter sensor hole and did the test again.
(Buzzer and light were constantly on).
Cold 6bar.
Warm 1.7-1.8 bar @ 2k revs
Warm 2 bar @ 2200 revs.
What do you think?
A little better than having the gauge in the top hole.
Cheers Mark
