Golf MK1 83 Campaign GTI 1800 DX - Stalling and total loss of power - Help!!!

Post

MK1 keeps cutting out and won't run for more than 5 mins

As my fuel mixture has been completely messed up.
The car refuses to start.

I have screwed the mixture screw all the way round to the left (lean). Does anyone know how many turns approximately I would need to make - to keep the car running?

If it's still not starting and just turning over go back to the basics and check them, I see you changed the dissy cap are the HT leads on in the right order? Are you getting a spark from the plugs, pull one out and hold it near the head when cranking you should see a spark but hold the HT lead with insulated pliers.
Can you smell petrol?
Timing ok?
loosen the connections to the fuel filter and is there petrol there?

Post up a picture of the engine etc and we may be able to see something wrong???

Thanks guys,

I've discovered we have good spark. All new dizzy, rotor, arm, cap, spark plugs and leads. So no issues there.

When we removed injector 1 and cranked the engine, and blocked the port the injector barely let out any petrol and just gave a dribble.

I removed and replaced the WUR pipes for a newer set and checked the filter gauge and cleaned with cotton buds - no dirt or grime came out.

Richard aka CQ advised me to remove the return fuel line and placed into a measuring jug and try cranking the engine over for 30 seconds. I should get 750 cl of fuel in the jug.

I have just tried this a few minutes ago and have discovered that no fuel at all is coming through the return pipe.

Why would this happen?

Brand new flexi fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel tank and filler neck are clean/rust free :'(

when you say the fuel pump is new, what spec/make is it?

hi Rubjonny,

Should I disconnect the black feed line and disconnect from the metering head? And put the pipe into a bottle?

I'm just scared of petrol and any sparks, I'll cover/shield  the battery with a cardboard box - is that safe?

yeah start at the metering head, the pipe that runs to it from the fuel filter. put it at a container then pull all the black wires off the coil and no sparks will happen ;)

Hi Rubjonny,

Did as advised and disconnected the black supply line from the end of the filter (going into the metering head) and placed the pipe in a empty bottle. Disconnected the black wires & tried cranking the engine for 30 seconds.

No fuel came through at all? The GSF pump is made by Vetech & when I turn the ignition i cannot hear the fuel pump buzz at all??

Hi,

I've just tried turning the ignition with the fuel pump hanging down a bit a check the terminals with a multimeter and appears to getting no reading. Does anyone know where the wires from the fuel pump run across into the fuse box? Is this the same wires that go from the top of the tank for the fuel gauge? O_o

aha. the fuel pump power feed comes from E/14 on the fusebox, fuse #5.

The level sender wires go to a different pins but then loom does run together most of the way

Would a faulty relay also cause this problem?

You could bridge the 2 bigger connections on the fuse box where the relay normally lives and that should make your fuel pump run even with the ignition off.
Or take the replay out underneath the fuel pump relay, turn it around and fit where the fuel pump relay lives then the pump should run with the ignition on.

very possible, or the wiring to the coil negative is bad as the kjet relay needs that to trigger.
