Which engine?

If its nocking then something aint right and the coice of oil is unlikly to have affected it.

Did you have good oil preasure from the word go?

This is going to sound  mad, but give it a try get a pices of wood about 1/2 a mtere long, blip the throttle and put the wood againt your ear and ontop of the rocker cover. If the sound is louder comming to your ear then it's the top end, If not its probley a problem with the bottom end.

I told you it sounded mad but my daa uses it all the time to locate a problem.

As you've guess not an easy solution but you may have to drop the sump and check the crank bearings one may have been installed wrong/loose etc.

You should have a warrenty on the engine for that amount of miles?

i would  still like to know the corect oil for the car then i have got rid of knock.
this is a real low point for me as i have spent so much money, so much work, and a wife who thinks i am mad but i still love the car but i just what it to be as good as every one says that are.
is 500 miles ok for running in , since then i have gone to 6000- rpm twice once to beat my mates  rs escy and the other to beat a bmw     [no prob]           i am not giving it to much stick am i , if my sprite can cope then so sould me golf :banghead:

What sort of a knocking is it? Its not just pinking is it? Have you tried adjusting the timing to see if it improves it before rippin it to bits?

it's only a a small knock and you can only just hear it for a few seconds

might just be a sticking tappet

is it  a clicky tappy noise

Could well be the timing especially as you say the revs die down for a bit. If you dont have a timing light then you can time by ear quite well. Just losen the distributor clamp and turn it a tiny bit left or right to see if it improves. You could mark the original position first if you wanted to. You may need to adjust idle speed after you've made the adjustent. The Haynes will help you on this too.

I wouldn't have taken it to 6000 rpm until at least 1000 miles even then it has to be progressive  - it doesn't mean you can run around at 50 mph  for 500 miles then suddenly give it the big'un. you need to build up slowly to the full rev range, under 3000 for the first 1000 miles then 4000 for the next 500 miles and so on.
Hopefully you've not done any damage and the above is only a guide for a fully rebuilt engine every one will tell you different things but that is how my impreza was run in and I was very strict with oil changes in between and started off with a mineral oil especialy for running then after 1000 miles I went semi synth and fully synth after 3000 miles.
I would say a good 10w/40 would be ideal for most Golf GTIs.
You need to take it back to the garage and get them to check - you must have some kind of warrenty for it???

If it was a timing problem  wouldent it be more likely to knock when accelerating rather than decelerating ? . Never had a new engine but i always run mine on quantum semi synth and i have had no problems with it .

This sounds like a tappet ….
As far as I can recall a small end or big end would knock under load, or all the time if it's bad, NOT under decelleration, or am I going off on a tangent ???

Oh Yeah, I misread that! Wouldn't hurt to check it though!

I had a knocking on deceleration from the wheel area… turned out to be loose wheel bolts

defiantely coming from the engine? even in or out of gear?

I know how you feel my car before the golf, I replaced the engine then 400 miles later ended upside down in the middle of the road!!!!! aaaghh

the piece of wood trick will help you isolate the tappits easily

On running in, it's always recommended to use standard oil or running in oil to help the rings bed in..ie you want it to wear, synthetic oil can cause the bores to glaze and prevent the oil control rings from doing there job effectively. as Mr_GTI says you should not rev it hard until you've done between 500 and 1000 miles for the same reason.

you say it doesnt do it under acceleration just when the revs dip? so could it be the engine is just strugling? sort the reason why its strugling and hence stop the knocking?

thanks for all your help chaps                i think i will mess around with timing allthough has been tunned by a top jolly vw bloke who i will get to lisen to knock. i will also do the wood to the ear test . i am sure if i do the same and put wood to the sump it will work :dontknow: worth a try.
as its only a second car i will still use it a bit , go easy on it for a bit and see if it gets any worse.
i know the 6000 rpm was silly but how hard is it to run a gti in when the voices in your head says more power a bit more power it wont hurt a little more power.
