Cambelt timing marks

Post

Hi all,I need you expertise again,I've been reading old posts about the timimg marks on a golf gti 1800 with a dx engine, and I'm more confused that I was when I started,do I use the diamond shape on the flywheel or the dent /dot just before it I know the cam need to be level with the rocker cover and the crankshaft line up with the other pulley but not sure about the flywheel

I've never bothered with checking the marks on the fly wheel unless using a timing light but on my mk1 with the fuel injection it's so hard to see in I don't bother with it.
Why do you want to look at the flywheel marks?
I adjust the timing by advancing the timing till it starts to pink under load the back it off a little till it stops pinking but you need to be driving the car and stopping then adjusting so you need a quiet country road for this.
Also the timing depends on what fuel you are using, super unleaded (best fuel to run these cars on) or normal unleaded as the timing needs to be retarded.

www.cabby-info.com has pictorials for the marks.

Crank at the Diamond on the tranny. (0TDC).
Dimple on the Cam at the top of the valve cover.

Don't use the pulleys…..
Take the Cap off the Dizzy, and the rotor should be in the middle of the Hash mark that is stamped on the side frame of the dizzy housing.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

I thought the diamond on the flywheel was 6degrees before TDC? The dimple on the flywheel is 0TDC?

Also, simple question re: running advance… Is that a higher degrees, as in 7degrees is more advance? I never know which way to turn the dizzy to advance or retard the timing?

Clockwise = advance
Anti clockwise = retard.

I guess so, I don't worry about degrees and all that,
I keep advancing it till it "pinks" under load then retard it till it stops. Job done, no special tools other than a 13mm spanner and a 7mm spanner to adjust the tick over speed.
Only ever had to adjust the timing a few times in the 20 years of having the car, when I tried to run normal unleaded then when I went back to super unleaded and when I changed the engine over to one I had rebuilt so I don't ever mess with it once it's set.

use this guide for timing mark info and pictures:

ignore the setup procedures obviously. for ignition timing you set this up at idle with the vacuum line to the dizzy disconnected and plugged, using the big diamond. for idle and co this is done at idle, with the breather off if the oil is heavily contaminated. aim for about 1.5% co, YMMV

but as above you can usually add more advance with decent fuel, 8 degrees is a good starting point (or just a smidgeon further round than the diamond )
