what do i need
hi, went to vw festival this weekend and noticed afew cars running the abf engine on bike carbs as i plan to do that are running a distributr less system from what i managed to gather its like a stand alone management which takes a reading from the crank position or something and creates the spark.. i was just wondering if anybody knew about these kits? or where they could be sourced from. cheers james

Megajolt if its carbs. Simple setup, I've been running it for a while.
Crank sensor and a 36-1 trigger wheel.
Edis module from a 90's ford (electronic distributor ignition system)
Coil pack from a ford ka.
Different ways if doing it too, carbs need a tps in them or you do MAP (manifold air pressure) but inlet read bad news in map systems, good on tps.
Can get it from trigger-wheels but need to build
It up and make brackets etc for sensor, trigger wheels requires a spacer too as abf crank has a dampening ring on the pulley.

cheers i shall have a look into it! you say your running it at the min do you find it a good set up? or do you think its better on the dizzy cap?

Yeah been running it for a bit.
I think its great myself, stronger starts even when cold, cleaner revs, and raised rev limit.
With an abf though you'll need a spacer for the bottom pulley not included. Any machine shop can make this up for you.

cheers brad got a guy doing all my fabrication and stuff so he'll be all over that.. with the mega jolt does it need setting up with your carbs for like the rev limits and things or is that just set in the megajolt system… also does the mega jolt require a new ignition system as my mate who put an abf in his mk1 bought a new ignition system aswell.. cheers for ur help brad just trying to get my head around this lol

Mega jolt is the ignition system.
It read from a tps on the carbs, if yours haven't got one then I suggest you get some carbs with a tps (throttle position sensor)
Either that or get the map version of megajolt and works/reads the pressure in the manifold. But to be specific you'd need a tap onto all 4 cylinders, not something you wanna do when smoothing…

think im getting somewhere near understanding now brad.. so basically the tps would send back its signal to the mega jolt system to tell it what position throttle is in so it knows how to manage the spark? please correct me if im wrong.. also the mega jolt would completly remove the need for a dizzy cap or ecu ans this would all be done through the mega jolt? cheers for your help!

Right bear with me here.
The megajolt is an ecu, its run alongside the ford EDIS module. The edis sends the spark.
The ecu takes a reading of both crank position, so it knows which cylinder to fire, and tps, so yeah on a way, it knows how wide the throttle is and knows how to spark.
Once its tool the signal, it then goes to edis, which sends spark to the coil pack, then down the appropriate lead.
In all, I was very happy when running it, would still be running it but I'm doing a turbo, it can't control boost so I need megasquirt now.
The wiring, once you get your head around it, isn't complicated as such, its pretty dumbed down more than anything.

ahh right thats brilliant cheers does the tps affect the spark then? so less/more throttle the sparks different? yea should be easy enough... on the website theres a tacho bit would that run an aftermarket tacho at all? also how is the mega jolt set up? cheers

Yes more spark due to more revs
Yes you can run an aftermarket tacho
And its setup via a laptop (get lead and cd with the pack)

cheers thats brilliant and last one i think... if the carbs dont have a tps can you fit an aftermarket one? or would you need new carbs?

Not sure in that front, on should be able to be fitted, its only a sensor on the linkage, but to what extent the works is couldn't tell you.

cheers brad deffo helped me out alot ive also been told that H&H ignition solutions do some sort of system are you aware of that at all? or know anyone running it?

Slim rich on here is running it, but he's also asked me about mega. Think that speaks for itself
No worries
