Then we see the ?1000 price reduction of the converted 5 door car, mentioned on here previously.
Used cars for sale - PistonHeads UK
It almost looks reasonable?

It doesn't matter if a car's ?2000 overpriced or ?12000, if its too much it won't sell. So it doesn't affect true values of Mk1 Golfs. Only cars actually bought and sold will form the market value.
Well said Paul.

Maybe the mk1 Gti has arrived and everyone will get one to keep alongside their Porsche/Ferrari, so that they can actually enjoy using a sporty car in the congested south?

On a positive note, when you look at the normal Aston, Bugatti, Rolls, ferrari, etc… normally stocked by Mr Hartley, it shows the high esteem the mk1 Gti is held in….I doubt he will suddenly start stocking old Astras and XR3i's ???

Good point. It may be overpriced and who knows how well the resto has been done, but the best cars are selling for five figure sums. Considering how difficult/expensive it is to find OEM parts, (proper) resto costs, etc you can't nut and bolt for less than ?10k.

now while this is a good thing if you have a barn full of split screen campers but anybody new getting into the scene cant afford one.
as our cars become rarer they will go up in value, they will become classics all its going to take is a programe on telly to have the hero in a mk1 and prices will go up (ashes to ashes, prices of quattros are climbing) if your selling bugatis then 16k is small change someone may buy this, more fool them, but this is not good you have to see the big picture if prices rise, especially in the curret climate, it will start to change the scene but not in a good way, think about it this car is about 3 times what its worth next time you buy something think what it would be like if everything was 3 times more expensive, not good

e.g. if you buy a basket case for ?500 and spend ?5k getting it very sound but obviously not concours, more people will be willing to save a car if it will retain some values.
It can get silly though, my main automotive passion is lightweight 911 and we have seen these go crazy in the last 5 years doubling in the last 3 years, it does bring new people to the scene and some long standing owners enthusiasts cash in or can't justify using the car as they did before.
I also owned genuine '60s Mini Coopers in the '80s and briefly a Lotus Cortina mk1, these were bought for less than a grand and sold a year later. Today genuine Cooper S in great nick can be ?20k+ and Lotus Cortina mk1 start at ?25k now for a car potentially needing some work.
It's funny though the TV show has done relatively little to Quattro prices, I was involved in the purchase of a late RR, 2 years ago. You have to maintain them correctly to keep value and on the basis that some parts are discontinued, prices have barely moved,,,unlike the Escort Cosworth which is up 25-30% easily over the same time frame.
So, personally I don't mind price rises if it can help to keep some good cars running in the hands of the enthusiast

As Dubboy said you couldn't do a car of that quality for less than 10K, even doing some of it yourself and being economical with labour costs. This car was restored using VW parts wherever possible. I went to VW for a set of rear brake shoes for mine the other day…. they wanted ?80! 8O . This car has had a lot of money, time and effort spent on it.
As regards to being bad for the scene and pricing people out of the market I don't agree, there are plenty of cars around for reasonable amounts of money and not everyone is going to throw 10K + at every surviving MK1.
I served my apprentiship restoring vintage Rolls Royce cars which were worth only scrap value in the 50's. I restored one of these which was up for sale at ?3,000,000 in the 90's so yes values will increase.
Take a look at the price of a similar MK1 Escort or Cortina - higher price than this Mk1.
It is good that it is mixing with the likes of Ferraris, Rollers etc as it gives the marque real upper classic status. It will also insure that those awkward obsolete parts will no doubt be remanufactured making restorers' jobs easier.
If you've already got a MK1 (most on here have) then rejoyce in the knowledge that not many hobbies are increasing investments these days but yours probably is. Although I do think if anyone pays the asking for this car then its going to be a few years before they see any return! :?
My missus said I can't have it so in the words of Peter Jones, "I'm out."

Unless anyone wants to give me 15K for mine!!

Nut and bolt restorations will not give change from ?10,000 on any mk1, but as with all things, they are only worth what someone will pay. At least insurance companies are now responding to the mk1 as a true classic, and offering proper policies to reflect this.
