BBS rims and similar
I am open to suggestions to other rims as long as they are not too expensive and are, wide, deep, with a big lip like the split rims.

banded steels are wide and can have a lip but don't cost too much.
Compared to splits, maybe. But they're not much cheaper than most 1pc alloys.
You're looking to pay at least ?340 to have a 1" band put in, and then you've got to pay for the steels themselves, so if you got a cheap second hand pair you're probably looking at ?400, if you bought new G60s you'd be looking at about ?470. Add around ?160 worth of decent quality rubber?
For ?560 all in (assuming you got cheap steels) they're not that much cheaper than the run of the mill ATS/Borbet/Rota/Lenso designs you see a lot of.
Best bet if you're on a tight budget is looking for some second hand sets of things like ATS Classics etc. There are lots of them about, so they're cheap enough second hand, and they have a bit of dish.

the lenso BSX are 1 piece replicas of RS and are 7.5" wide, i dont think theres that much dish for a 7.5" rim.
if you want wheels with a big dish then you wont really be able to stay at et28, however just because they are a lower ET doesnt mean they wont fit.
If you want 14" wheels then Borbet T come in with a nice dish. you're still looking at about ?400 new without tyres for them though.
have a look on www.dubmeister.co.uk as they have a good selection of wheels.
but its all about your budget. If you've only got about ?300 to spend then you're not really going to find and real split rim wheels.

I also quite like the look of the Rota RB rims.
Sorry just remembered something. As an option, You could get some cheap 13" wheels from this place, though they'd be the wrong PCD so you'd have to do some work to make them fit. A couple of people on here have mini wheels on their Golfs, but I'm not sure how they managed it. Possibly wobble bolts.

i wouldnt really go to a backstreet garage to get steels widened. them guys give a certificate etc to show they are road worthy.

Do you know if you can get black centre caps for these wheels or even better do you know whether the black centre caps saying 'BBS' will fit.
I would also probably try and get the 16" version as they are wider but then they are a bit too much money really?!?!?!
I just have to decide between a shallow looking rim or a bigger deep rim. And I will be lowering it!

id just save up abit more and get some RMs as it seems that that is what you really want.

Or maybe just big rimmed wheels already wether their splits or not, if you want deep just try and find deep.

So far it is just a standard (spotless with NO rust) Mk1 Golf GX 1.5 with an alpine head unit and a weber carb.
Once again thanks for the advice and I will look around (eBay) and have a think about it!
