1.8 16v kr on mk1 on twin 45 carbs 170bhp ?1.6k
2.0 16v abf in mk1 ?2.3k 150bhp
g60 standard spec in mk1 ?3.1k 160bhp
1.8t 20v agu on your gbox ?4.5k 200bhp
on uprated 02a box or 02j box 5 speed with either cable conversion or hydraulic
1.8t 20v 180/225bhp front mounted intercooler/new exhaust ?5.1k

r32 230bhp 5 speed vr6 box ?6.6k
your optional extras are brake upgrade, servo/mastercylinder. coilovers. rear disc conversion etc…
if you would like any more detail about any of the above conversions please ask.
Might give you a few ideas.

That's no way near enough for a VR6 conversion (see price guide above). You're well on your way to affording a 16V conversion though. Might even be able to do a 1.8 16V on that money.
A 1.8 16v? As opposed to? I'm lost on this one.
Your best bet is a 16v lump as they are so cheap you'll be able to buy the lump for the loose change you have down the back of the sofa.
If you then use some of your funds for twin weber carbs you won't have to convert to fuel injection which saves hassle.
You'll want a conversion tubular exhaust manifold from someone like Ashley.
If you use some of the money to go for a cylinder head job (there isn't too much you can do really, just port match and bullet the valve stem seals), throw a pair of cams at it and bobs your unckle.
On road going 16v engines we've had 190bhp from an 1800 on K-jet (with alot of work) and on competition engines, we've had 230bhp from a 2.0 on twin Webers (again, with ALOT of work).
The 16v engine is a dead simple conversion, it's tried and tested, it's cheap, it makes similar power to a VR and it doesn't require anywhere near the amount of fabrication or nightmares that a VR into a Mk1 causes.
Other option I guess is to find a G60 lump but you'll have to convert to fuel injection then plus the superchargers can require expert attention.

As opposed to a 2.0 16V, which was mentioned previously. I think alexHxC's car is already a GTI, so there's no worries re: the fuel system to retain K-Jet.

Don't bother with the 50mm inlet manifold unless you are aiming at 200bhp plus. Many people will tell you to use it but the smaller diameter one promotes better atomisation.
You can use Porsche fuel injectors with it if you like.
What you will want to do is go up to 254mm brake discs (which means finding early Audi 90 calipers and carriers).

a grand just for the engine box loom etc not the whole conversion i said i will buy the rest over time!
ive contemplated the abf on webbers but that seems the easiest route.
on e38 ther was a vr6 engine on its own for 350 quid an the box was 200. i know i would need a few more ancilliaries but its not overly expensive to buy JUST the essentials to begin with.

I have the TSR Donnington in mine and had on rolling road few weeks ago chugged out 135bhp at flywheel got print out if you want to see it good torque toochris_16v said
I personally wouldnt bother uprating the engine for anything under 150bhp…. you can get near to that power from the 1.8 8v GTi engine, from places such as TSR although thats costly too.
