VW was not daft [to keep costs down] , both the MK1 and MK2 wiring is very similar and was only adapted when necessary . Although switches etc were altered wiring colours used were common to both cars . Either option is not easy , me i would adapt the MK1 wiring to suit the MK2 engine , study Haynes MK2 manual [green cover] and MK1 [brown cover] wiring diagrams .
Label wiring and work out what you need , what doesn't work now and what needs to . The rest will be a breeze !

if it has the old glass fusebox as paul_h says its easier to add seperate ecu and fuel pump relays above the fusebox, since the older fusebox has non of the required feeds out the back for digifant systems.
if its got the newer blade fusebox you can wire it up as per oem mk2 pre-90 digifant, and fit ecu and pump relays in the correct spot. choice is yours!
